Pooches: On Decorum and Raffle Results!

Miss M is the first female dog I've ever owned. I never really thought that gender made much of a difference, but now I'm wondering if the problem we're having is gender related.
See, Miss M won't pee in front of E.
He has to take her on a 30 minute walk, to the point where she just can't hold it any longer, just to get her to pee. I've been working on conditioning her to pee by giving her treats, and with me she'll go right away....but she is still very demure. She has to find a tree or pole and she will only pee if she is hidden from sight.
Mr. B, on the other hand, is easy and will go ahead and pee on anything and everything.
This is very annoying for us because we don't have a yard and we have to actually walk her around until she does pee. Is this a normal gender-specific problem? Or is it just dog specific?
And now for the raffle results...
Again, thank you to everyone for all your support. Based on our discussions, we will be using the donations to help another special-needs pitbull. As Tucker says so well: "My contribution by itself it really can't do much. But that little bit, in combination with the other donations, can really make a difference." Stay tuned for more information on that special pooch!
Heather used a random number generator to select the winners. We will be contacting you via email, and shipping out your prizes shortly. Winners are:
-Dog Backpack: Dorene Honeycutt
-Pet Portrait: Ann Graf
-Camera: Sherri Jeakins
-Sirius Republic Collar: Karen Rayfield
-Sirius Republic Collar: Samantha Wood
-Standard Silly Buddy Collar: Helen Vasey
-Pecan Pie Puppies Collar: Monica Schrager
-Flea/Tick Preventative: Heather Wallace
-Saucony Backpack: Jennifer Sim
-Homemade Biscuits: Patricia Uribe
Funny enough, I realized I only know people by their screen names and/or blogs, so I'm not even sure who won what. Congrats to the winners! Thanks again everyone for your support!

Wow, Miss M is such a lady! We don't have that problem with either of our dogs, so it might just be a Miss M thing! Poor E!

Oh, my GOSH. I Won the camera, I can't believe it. I am so excited and can't wait to get it to try it out. I was so glad to be able to be part of this fundraiser and even though we lost Shy/Khloe so glad her memory will live on with another special needs pittie. HoundDogMom

Oh, in all my excitement about the camera I forgot to comment about the potty issue. Winston pees on everything, Cleo has to find that special spot and Amiee won't even pee or poop on a walk, it has to be her yard. Once when we went camping she held it for like 24 hours before she finally peed and never did poop the whole weekend. Yikes, HoundDogMom

I think that's particular to Ms. M :) Of all the female dogs I know (our own, relatives', rescue dogs, etc.) I've never heard of that, lol. She's just a girl who likes her privacy!

Congrats to all the winners!

congrats to everyone who won!!

on the pee issue: lollie was the first female dog we've ever had, and we had a similar issue -- at first. she would pee and poop in the yard, but not on walks. ever. at all.

we fixed the problem by crating her, and taking her straight from crate to leash walk, and if she didn't go, she'd go right back in the crate. after a few iterations (only a few hours), she had to go emergently enough, that she went outside. we gave her high-value treats right at the end of the pee, and lots of praise.

it took a few weeks, but as my mother in law calls it, the "treatie-for-peetie" eventually took hold, and she had no trouble after that.

good luck!

I've had ONLY girl dogs during my lifetime, and I'd say that's a dog specific behavior--she's just ladylike! My current girl is exactly opposite...she pees frequently in a lot of places (I have actually seen her hike her leg to pee on trees, too...I've NEVER seen a female do that before!)

Ohh bless her demure sweetness, I think it could be just her being a very well mannered young lady. None of my girls have had any problems peeing anywhere at anytime. Sorry I could not have been of any help.
Congratulations to the winners.

Gosh, I don't know, but she sure does look look pretty in pink.

It has to be gender related. My boys pee on EVERYTHING!!! Every bush, tree, hydrant and mailbox. The girls, however, rarely potty on a walk. The one exception was Nikki has an upset stomach- apparently- and pooped right smack in front of the fanciest hotel in our city! Welcome to Greenville everyone! Ugh. The doorman had to get me a bag and hot water. I was holding 2 dogs and cleaning up a massive poo. It was that bad!

Congratulations to all the raffle winners ... and you can bet I'm going to be checking Hound Dog Mom's blog frequently to see what pictures she's taking with that camera! Very cool!

Oh, yes ... Phoebe and Miss M. are very alike in the pee department. From the first day I brought her home, she staked out a place in the side yard shrubbery that is "her" place to potty. She will occasionally go while on walks, but generally prefers to "save it up" for when we get home to her own potty. :)

I personally think it must be dog specific. My border collie HATED for anyone to watch her potty. My current girls don't care....only problem I have with them is that they know when I am going to be gone for a long day and they take FOREVER to go poo! LOL

Congrats to the winners!!

I think that's a Miss M issue. Emma's my first girlie too and she runs out, pees and poops within 2 minutes, and then tries to drag me back home. SO much easier than Charlie who needs at least 15 minutes to get all his pee out - and lots of vertical objects on which to pee.

I hate making up stories about dog's pasts, but not wanting to pee in front of someone can be fallout from previous punishment. If she had a male owner who punished her for having accidents in the house, she could have decided it was safer to not pee in front of men. Again, I hate doing this and there are a zillion other things it can be. I've just seen it more often than I'd like to with puppies.

Congrats to all the winners and we'll be in touch with the Sirius Republic winners shortly!
In regards to Miss M, I think it's a dog thing. All my female dogs, Pittie or not, will go anywhere. Yes poor E!

My girl, Laci, has no problems peeing in public, but I think its because Apollo (our male pup) pees first...they are forever trying to cover each others spot at the dog park. Its almost like a little sister thing with her, the whole "I can do that too" trying to be like big brother attitude.

Congrats to everyone who won. I will be contacting you (Patricia U.) just shortly in order to coordinate delivery. I also want to say THANK YOU to the Two Pittie folks and Heather for everything you have done. You are outstanding people with big hearts, great job on the coordination of this effort. :-)

Congrats to all the winners!

The pee thing must be a dog specific thing. We trained Darwin from when she was tiny to pee when we tell her to "go potty" so she'll go right away. If it's raining out, she'll go quicker so she can get back in where it's dry.

WOW! thank you. I won a backpack. I am Dillon's mom. Levi Mac's auntie.

Bilbo is a typical boydog of course and "decorates" everything! But I did have a foster lady who used to take forever to pee - I think in her case it was just that everything was so exciting she didn't want to take a moment. On the first night I got her we went for a 3 hour walk and she still didn't manage to go...until she got back in the house that is. Sigh.

We're VERY excited about winning a collar and looking forward to hearing about which lucky pup will carry on Shy's memory.

Backcountry Brodie said...

That do be dog specific coz I be the same way. I want my privacies and I want MY yard. I mite pee on hikes if'n mom is not watching but I nefur poo on hikes. Now my two sisses, wot is gurls, they dussn't care and they pee and poo any old place no matter who be watching. They has no class, I tell you.

WELL...I can tell ya that I can pee anyplace, any time, in front of anybuddy. (Uh, except in the house.) I'm really pretty proud of my peeing prowess. I bet if there was a peeing Olympics, I might even win!

Butt...I do think it's awfully cute that Miss M is such a ladylike pee-er. Do you think maybe it's cuz she's afraid when she pees the walk is gonna be over?

We totally believe females are very different. Lily is moms first girl too. She is a character. Pees and poops the second we get outside. Then stops to wait for people to pet her. Me, I'm like Mr. B

Hmmm... sounds like a Miss M issue to me. Unless it just started, then it sounds like a UTI issue. But I'm sure you'd be on top of that. I've always trained my dogs to go on some sort of magic word or phrase. Right now it's "do your business." I've had three dogs, and it's worked like a charm on all of them. Friends used to joke that I had the only dog that would poop on command as easily as doing "give me a paw" or "sit." It's funny though - Lucky (the male) often seems to be looking for somewhere discreet to poop. He prefers English ivy, for some reason, and a small bush, or shrub is ideal. Lady, she goes anywhere. Though while we're on the topic of poop - LOL - both she and the last German Shepherd I had took foreverrrr to get the deed done. That must be a GSD thing!

I never owned a female dog. Darwin is my second male pug and he is so different from my first pug. My first pug had no problems doing his business outside. From the very beginning Darwin was extremely anxious outside. After several months he's less anxious (thanks to many treats outside!), but he continues to require more time and work going outside. I think it depends on the dog's personality.

YEA!!!! We won the pet portrait!!! :) We are very happy about this. As for the peeing, well Daisy lifts her leg like a boy when on walks. I guess no tutus for her she is a tomboy.

Congrats to all the winners!

Arwen is very picky about her pee and poo spots, whereas Nyxie doesn't give a lick about where or near who. She does, however, require that the perimeter is secure...

I had to toilet train Barbie at the age of 2, so she is great at peeing in front of me. In fact it is the first thing she does when we get out of the car or go into the yard or go for a walk. Pooing takes a bit longer but she does do that on command also. Just keep going with the food treats and get E to use them too. You'll get her eventually!

Antoinette Errante said...

Shoot, Lola has not at all inhibited, although she prefers to pee on top of Max's pee. But you're talking about the dog who pooped for about 15 minutes straight righ in the middle of her puppy kindergarten classroom for all the other puppy parents to see and mutter prayers of thanks under their breaths it wasn't THEIR puppy.

In the 4 years we've had her, Sadie has never gone to the bathroom while on a leash. Never. Not once. Thank god we have a yard! It took about 2 years before she would poop while we were in the backyard with her. Such a lady!

Oh my does Miss M look absolutely smashing in her pink tutu! :D

And that last photo made me laugh so hard I fell off the chair! :D

Me, I'm with Mr. B. Must go anywhere and everywhere except of course within the house confines ;) Oh and if it's entertaining to a crowd, let em watch ;)

Hmm..I have only had male dogs and yes, they pee on everything. Kirby and I were walking the other day and there was a patch of grass that got chewed up by the snow plow this winter laying along the road. Yes, he had to pee on it...

It's kind of cute that Miss M is self conscious.

I am so thankful to have won the flea/tick preventative; it will come in very handy :) We have always had female dogs (besides fosters) and they have always pottied while on leash. Miss M must just be a true LADY! Thank you!

Ha! The girls around here are NOT shy! But Cooper hides in the bushes to do his business. We would swear he's channeling one of our shepherd brothers who used to do the same thing!

And congrats to all the raffle winners!!!
