Mr. B vs Stairs Part II

We apologize that the blog has taken a backseat to everything that has been going on in our lives. The pooches are doing well, but getting older. A has noticed that Mr. B started to sit funny, so she decided to get his hips checked when he was in for his routine senior blood panel and shots. Everything looks great, but poor Mr. B has some pain in his hips from old age. We were told to minimize Mr. B's use of the stairs.
However, Mr. B has his own agenda, to live to the fullest and follow us everywhere. A and I have been working on getting Mr. B to stay on one floor, the main floor during the day and the top floor in the evening. We tend to forget things or need to do things on different floors and while heading up or down the stairs, we make sure to yell "stay" to Mr. B before we go up or down the stairs.
As we yell "stay" we can see the little wheel in his head turning, deciding whether to stay or follow us when we aren't looking. Next thing we know Mr. B is sitting right next to us, when he should have been staying. Now we run whenever we have to make a quick stop on a different floor and try to catch Mr. B before he has made it halfway on the stairs.
Due to all this running, A and I are keeping in shape going up and down the stairs. Through all this Miss M could care less about us. She chooses to stay wherever she wants, including laying in her own pee pads, a post for another day.

Is there anything you do to keep your dog's hips healthy?

I give them glucosamine and chondritin. I don't know if it helps but it doesn't hurt❤️❤️

Sure do love Mr. B and Miss M! It is hard to see our pups age, and we want to help them be as comfortable as possible. There are products at Petco or Petsmart that we used for our older lab, and they seemed to help. You could try some treats, such as Dogswell Happy Hips, that are made for hip pain, and tablets such as "I and Love and You My Joints Ache Dog Supplement." Hope Mr. B feels better, and we look forward to another post on your blog about Miss M. :) Very inspired that y'all and the pups live life to the fullest!

It sounds like he would benefit greatly from canine rehab. I work at Integrative Pet Care in Bucktown and we see cases like that everyday. owners are always amazed how much their pet health improve with just some sessions, especially when simply limiting their activity is not really feasible. I am not trying to be a salesman but just wanted to give you that option in case your vet didn't.

Mr. B! Melvin had the same issues. We had to add a stair runner to help him get up and down and that helped tremendously, helps Jake now too! We tried a lot of supplements with Melvin but the number one thing that made the most difference in his mobility issues was switching to a raw diet. After about a month on it, he was puppyish again. (And you had me at pee pads, obviously! Jake even nodded. )

I've been using K9 Joint Strong on my english bulldog for a few years now and seems to really be helping. He 14 now, so we must be doing something right! We also use fish oil pills for his skin.

Missed those cute faces!! You could try a gate at the bottom of the stairs? Might help. :-)

I agree with Francisco - if Mr. B is amenable, hydro therapy is a great option. My Katie tolerated the treadmill because she knew the real swimming was her reward, while both were great for her arthritis. We did it at Water4Dogs in NYC, but I know you have great local options in Chicago :)

Great to see Miss M and Mr. B! Udo's 3-6-9 oil or capsules. Udo's also makes a canine specific one.
