Pooches: Scaredy Mr. B

Since we don't have TV, I have grown accustomed to listening to all sporting events on the radio. For game 6 of the Stanley Cup, we were sitting outside enjoying the weather while listening to the game. When the Blackhawks won, the whole city lit up with fireworks, people were screaming and there was a dull hum of choppers. Right above the United Center were four news helicopters:Poor Mr. B was freaked out by the fireworks. Each time a firework went off, his ears would be pulled back and his head would look around for the source of the loud boom.
Even Ms. M, who was sleeping nicely in bed was alarmed by some of the fireworks. I don't think the pooches will ever get used to some of the sounds of the city.

  2. Some of us are very bothered by the sounds of fireworks and there are plenty out here in the 'burbs, too. They don't bother me much, but lots of doggies really hate them. I think they hurt their ears. Fourth of July is a mixed bag for doggies. On the one paw, barbecue, on the other, boomies.

  3. Ms. Rikki hates fireworks--she generally gets a mild sedative on the 4th of July...

  4. So far, Wilbur isn't afraid of anything (except maybe the cat!). I always feel so bad for dogs who are afraid of loud noises (my mom's bassett would nearly have a heart attack at thunder) but since Chicago won the Stanley Cup I have to say a little bit of doggy stress was worth it. I jumped up and down and screamed I was so excited!!!!

  5. Bless their hearts!
That's the reason we have not gone out for New Years for the past few years; our old neighborhood was loud and it scared the babies.
We tried to take them to Boomsday (Labor Day celebration http://www.boomsday.org/)a couple of years ago and ended up having to carry them - yes carry them - all the way through downtown Knoxville back to the car.
We learned our lesson the hard way.
Be so grateful you were at home.

  7. Aww, poor pups will have a tough time around the 4th. Didn't have too much in the way of fireworks up here, but had choppers over Wrigley, and had choppers the next morning when the Cup made it's way on the pub crawl. My grandmother used to tell me about a dog she had that really used to hate thunder and fireworks. She used to jump on the hamper they had in a corner of the bathroom. One time someone left the hamper open and when the dog went to jump on the hamper, she ended up IN it!

  8. Lilac in particular of ours hates them. We usually set up a crate in the basement for her so she can go down there and escape a lot of the worst of it. This time of year is pretty hard for her.

  9. We sure do understand that! I don't mind a few of those poppie things but Brudder Ranger HATES them. Mom says that he's much better than he used to be but he still thinks they're pretty awful.

  12. Fireworks season isn't big at our house either. Both Dory and Bilbo would much rather stay inside when the big booms start.

  13. We just bark at fireworks except Morgan. She gets on Mom's lap and shakes a lot. Mom says we're very happy about the Black Hawks. She watched the games on tv.

  14. As parents of pitties, I thought you might be interested in (and horrified at)this - Butte, MT is considering mandating the tethering of pit bulls http://network.bestfriends.org/campaigns/pitbulls/15550/news.aspx

  15. That isn't too bad a reaction. My Grandpa Angus used to try and go up the chimney or behind the toilet. Now THAT was freaking out.

Hope the annoying booms don't last too long.

  17. Poor Mr. B! We're not too scared of the loud booms, but Flash would love to come hold your paw during the scary times. Just tell Mommy and we'll be on our way!

  18. We hate fireworks too, the only good thing about me getting old is they do not sound quite so loud. I think I am going deaf.
