Pooches: Dogs & Yoga Mats

I mentioned before how I'm in the midst of training for the Chicago Marathon, and I had high hopes that the pooches would want to run with me. Unfortunately, with the hot and humid summer the dogs have been doing more sleeping than running.
In yet another attempt to foil my training, Miss M has also been hijacking my yoga mat. Every time I unfurl the mat for my after-run stretch, I turn around to this:
I think there is something about the spongy material that she just really likes. Needless to say, she is quite stubborn and it's really hard to move her off. She also thinks when I'm lying on the ground stretching, this is the perfect time to sit on me.
I have made some modifications and started to use her as a type of "yoga brick"; since my legs are so tight I can barely touch the floor, so it's nice to have her for balance when I attempt to touch the ground.
I think a yoga mat would actually be a good "bed" for dogs who might chew a regular bed, or have accidents in their crate. It would be really easy to wipe down, and still provide padding. I tested it out in Miss M's bed, and she sprung right in so she could lay on it. She still refused to move:At the same time, I've seen her practicing her moves around the house: "Downward Dog"Probably so she could pretend she's a natural on the mat:

  1. Miss M's just really into yoga right now. She's knows it's the cool thing to do. I think you should find one of those classes where you can taker with you and do yoga together. She'd be perfect for it!

  2. Crouching Miss M is what we will call her :)

I just got a great idea for my training for the teeth brushing and ear cleaning - instead of using the towel im going to use my yoga mat that is collecting dust in my closet! Thank you for the awesome idea!!

  3. Actually, I think she should put out a Doga DVD!

  4. Seems like you need to buy another yoga mat! Ms. M is never giving that one up now :)

  6. That face--That face--I luv that face!

Yoga mats are great for doggies. I cut one in two and keep them in the car so when me and the boys go somewhere and sit outside, they lay on them instead of the cement.

I also use them to line their crates too!

  8. You could start your own yoga studio and name it "It's a Pittie" Yoga. BOL! Okay, so we're corny. Cooper does yoga stretches just like Ms. M! He and Taz are very stretchy. Must be the terrier in 'em. Mom has one of those spongy mat thingys, but she keeps it safely hidden in the closet most of the time. BOL! Ms. M is very good not to chew that up. Cooper would have had it in shreds in two seconds. He likes to chew spongy things.

  10. Mesa loves to play with me when I try and stretch. We have to put out a bath mat each time we shower (if we leave it out Big Carl wants to mark it, gross) and every time I step out of the shower I see Mesa curled up on it and she refuses to move

  13. Ms. M. you are so funny. Kitty would just sit right on me too. Then a Coco would come along and wedge herself somewhere in the mix. The floor IS their territory I guess.
Purple is her color! Very pretty.

  14. Miss M is such a ham and so photogenic! But I hear where you're coming from; trying to move a pitty who doesn't want to be moved? Impossible!

  15. What a great idea! My yoga mat is also collecting dust in the closet. Maybe there's a chance that Ender will turn into a Yogi and calm down. haha.

  16. Ms. M is hilarious - she has very good form with her downward dog - haha! I agree with others that you should take her to a doggie yoga class. Although she might just want to lie on the mat rather than actually participate :)

  17. So cute. My dogs both want to get involved when I do any stretching on the floor also.

  18. I keep meaning to get around to doing a yoga post for our blog, but I think Miss M has the cuteness factor in spades. Maybe you need to get a second yoga mat and fake her out!

  19. Purple do be a furry fetching color for Miss M. She did a nice job commanding control of that doga mat. It's the only way us dogs can get stuffs.

  20. HAHAHA!!!! Actually, when Mom is doing her 'core' exercises, I find that it is the perfect time to lick her face, because I've got a captive audience! Mom doesn't seem to appreciate it, but really, what's a girl to do when Mom's face is at the perfect licking level?

  22. Oh my goodness looks like you are going to have to go out and get a few more mats so they can be all over the house and you can have one for Yoga. They are obviously comfy and do look great in the crate.

  26. With four on the floor, it's hard for a dog to resist joining in. I think they think we're finally getting a clue on how to behave properly.

Have a wonderful weekend, and happy blog hop!

  31. Miss M has great form.

I saw you commented on my blog about the sporn harness. The harness as fabric sherpa sleeves to prevent chaffing. They are washable and replaceable. You could even make you own if you wanted something with more padding.

    Have a great long weekend!

  34. This is my first comment to this wonderful blog. I have a 14 year old rescue Pitty named Dino and live in NYC.
Dino has an issue with beds… if noone is there to tuck him in he will shred every bed …until I finally found the solution : Workoutmats!!! they are even better than the yoga mat cause they are thicker. You can get them at any sporting good store for 20.- I cut them to size and then cover them with crochet blankets, a miracle fabric that Dino cannot tear into...
