Pooches: Eighteen Hours of Sleep or Miss M's Personal Marathon

I've heard that dogs need as much as 18 hours of sleep a day. While this sounds incredulous, when I really thought about it, I could see how our dogs are really only awake 6 hours a day. Especially Miss M who is totally lazy. We took these photos of her in the back of the car right after the Chicago Marathon. She had such a fun day of getting attention and being petted, it was her personal marathon to try to stay awake a bit longer. Sleep overcomes her:
She struggles to stay awake:
She's out:
One last attempt to stay awake:
And she's down for the count.

  2. I love watching the dogs try to fight sleep and eventually just give in. Koda tends to snore which is even funnier.

  8. So cute!!! I can definitely believe that dogs sleep up to 18 hours a day. Now that our dog is older and not feeling the best at times, her sleep schedule is more erratic. She will sometimes get up and wander into the bathroom during the night which wakes us up due to being such light sleepers. Of course she then gets to sleep all day, so we're the ones feeling as if we're zombies :)

  16. So cute. There is something incredibly soothing about watching a dog sleep. It's always a struggle for me to hold back from petting my dog while she's curled up on the couch.

  19. I wish I had pups that slept 18 hours a day! Mine are great at laying around but will hop up in a minute for a game of fetch, walk or just some attention.

  21. We do sleep rather a lot. If I go out and miss one of my naps I have to rest up extra to make up for it. Franklin doesn't sleep quite as much or as soundly during the day - well, he's young. I think he sleeps better through the night. You'll see when you get to be middle aged. You tend to wake up more in the night and I'm no exception.

    lotsa licks, Lola

  22. Great shots!

I read about the 18 hour thing recently too. I thought it was crazy... and then paid attention to just how much my dogs laze about :)

  23. Momma says, thank goodness dogs need lots of sleep or she would not be able to manage us at all. Of course I, Mango, require closer to 20 hours of sleep per day. Hey! Just lugging myself to the dinner bowl is tiring.

  25. Haha I love watching the epic sleep battle! I've also heard of the 18 hours of sleep thing. In fact, when my dogs haven't napped for a while they get cranky. They whine and fuss until they find a cozy enough spot to crash, then the marathon begins.
