Pooches: Daily Walk in 3.2.2011

We couldn't wait to take advantage of this weekend and take pictures with the pooches and
Mr. B couldn't wait to take pictures of his daily walk.
It is so nice to see all that there are only a few remnants of the blizzard of 2011 and
Ms. M feels the same.

    Though the grass is an ugly green/brown, it's nice to see again, isn't it!! Love that last picture of Miss M! What a great face!

    Miss M looks so funny in that last picture! It looks like the last of the snow has left KC too....let's just hope it stays that way! Bring on the spring! :)

    Oh, and we started using those latex paw covers too and love them! Although it has been hard to get Turk to stay still while we put them on him.

    So glad those yucky piles of dirty snow are gone! Any day now you'll be out walking and spot some little bit of color... a crocus, or stray daffodil... and oh, how it will make your heart sing!!!

    Ms. M has lovely eyes! You can check out www.dogsforautism.org for more specific information. In summary, our service dogs go through the same obedience, temperment and assistance training that any service dog would have to complete. Our dogs are assistive, search and alert (ASA) dogs. Children with autism often bolt across streets or wander off. Essentially, we build on the GSD natural herding instinct to avoid that behavior. There is also a "tethering" technique that can be used. The child is attached to the dog but feels that they are simply walking their dog. It's really hard to bolt when you are attached to an 80 or 90 lbs dog. Also our dogs are trained to search so in the event that a child does wander off, the dog immediately begins the search while authorities are contacted. Every child of autism is different so all of our dogs have to be trained and tailored to the needs of the household. Some homes have multiple children with autism. Our dogs are provided to families at no charge. A fully trained dog is valued at between $20-30K. We are funded fully through grants and donations. AND we are building a therapy dog program using rescue dogs. This is through a partnership with a local school for children with autism. We've been involved since January 2009 and it has been the MOST amazing experience.

    Miss M, that face, and those snow boots-- it's just too precious. Where I am in TX it is in the 70s. My bloodhound and I were sweating on our walk!

    It's so depressing that you still have snow on the ground (or did when you took these pictures). I think I would go crazy if we still had snow here. I'd be making that face too, Ms. M!
