DoggyStyle: Ms. M the Cleaning Lady

Ever wonder how we are able to keep our home so clean?
Miss M actually moonlights as our cleaning lady. When I realized she was treat-motivated, I decided to teach her something useful. Here she is putting her own toys away in her cleaning lady uniform. Though I don't know what to make of her partner who just seems to stand around, then quits in the middle of his shift, and still wants to get paid:

  1. Ms. M is like superdog! p.s. The peonies on your coffee table are beautiful!

  2. I love her little "Russian Babushka" look! When we took Turk to obedience classes, our trainer swore that if we worked really hard, we would be able to get Turk to put away his toys or get out specific toys. I never believed it was actually possible - Ms. M totally proved me wrong. And the "Die! Dead" command is hilarious! We pretend to shoot Turk and he will dramatically flip on his back but he only has one level of "deadness." I like that Ms. M has the variations. You guys rock!

  3. She is just too cute!! And it's hilarious how she will throw a toy down near the box but not quite in it, then look at you like "well, isn't that good enough?!" Then, realizing that no, that isn't going to produce a treat, run back to put the toy in the box.

  4. I particularly love how Ms. M recovered from her wardrobe malfunction!

  5. I will NEVER get tired of the "put it away" routine. Can you illuminate me on how you accomplished this? I think Chick would be good at it, and I've been looking for another good trick to teach him.

The cleanliness of your house is always impressive, but I am even more curious -- how do you fight untidiness? Our house is fairly clean, but it seems that there area always papers, bags, dog bones, and dog beds scattered about.

  6. The cuteness in that video is unbearable. Love it. I would like to hire Ms. M for my own home. What's her hourly rate? I have plenty of "balls" that need to picked up and put away. :)

  7. I love this!!! Your dogs are soooo well trained! I am very proud of you! Hehe. I know how much time you must have spent to get them to where they are now. It shows!

  8. I can't stop laughing! Ms M really belongs on TV. The best part is that she is clearly having fun putting away her toys; it's a game, not a chore.

  9. Incredible! Those are 2 fabulous dogs :) I too would love to know how exactly you went about teaching this routine! My apologies if you've already posted about it!

  12. Miss M. needs to hire herself out! She could afford lots more mac and cheese ice cream with her wages!

  13. I love this times a thousand! The maid outfit is the best. And I literally LOL'ed when she tried 3 times to put away that ring.

Okay, I hope Scott gets home soon so I can show him this!

  14. ASK THE CT GOVERNOR DAN MALLOY TO VETO THIS DISCRIMINATORY AND DANGEROUS PIECE OF LEGISLATION...

HOUSE SUBSTITUTE BILL 5368 = the anti-rescue bill --- is so punitive to humane groups financially and administratively that it will...

    1. stop animal rescue groups from holding adoption events

    2. stop rescues from bringing rescued/vetted animals into Connecticut from other states

    3. steer people to buy from breeders instead of saving the life of a shelter animal

    4. cause thousands and thousands more homeless pets to die in shelters

This bill will become law on July 15th unless we persuade Governor Malloy to VETO it!

Please take 10 SECONDS to sign your name here...

    http://www.ct.gov/malloy/cwp/view.asp?a=3998&q=479082

You can write a very quick comment - just as long as you get your name signed on the form and you write something to the effect of "Do NOT pass House Substitute Bill 5368. It will cause the deaths of shelter animals".

  21. Miss M is so focused and attentive! I am so impressed with all the tricks she knows! This is such a hilarious video I literally laughed out loud especially when Miss M is trying desperately to shake her scarf off her head ha. As alwawys your dogs are great :), but like you didn't know that already!

  22. How good Miss M is even her head dress suits her, on the other hand Mr B looks amazed she is putting the toys away.

  23. Um, guys, we need to have a talk with you. You've got the training a little backwards - the PEEPS are supposed to do all the work! However, we are very impressed with Ms M's cleaning abilities. But Mr. B - it's not the 50's and guys are expected to do some of the housekeeping chores, too, dude! And, um, when you're done there, could you come over here and tidy up a bit? It's a mess 'cause NOBODY around here likes to clean up!

PeeS - haha our squiggle word is 'nonsit'

  25. Miss M, can you come over and clean my house next? Just too darned cute!

  26. Thanks everyone! Miss M is so pleased she is now considering opening a "Putting Your Toys Away" business. For treats, of course. I realized I have never posted the steps, so we'll do a post next week with the details of how we taught her. And for other questions...
Alexandra--I guess since we have such an open floorplan, if one thing looks messy, it all looks messy. So we created an elaborate system of storage boxes where we just kind of toss things. But my real motivator...I buy fresh flowers every week and there's just something about spending the money and having these pretty flowers that encourages me to clean all the areas around them so I can always enjoy them. And I guess being a high school teacher and cleaning up after my 170 teens kind of made me a bit OCD too.
Ashley--The table is an old Heywood Wakefield cocktail table. If you google that you can usually come up with some for sale on Ebay or Craigslist. Some of them are more expensive, but ours is a bit run down (it could use a good refinishing and has some scars on the top) and I bought it for about $100 on Ebay a couple of years ago. I like that it's round so if the dogs run into it they won't be hurt by sharp edges. Plus, it's super lightweight which is just perfect to move around when we vacuum.

  27. Too funny! I LOVE the babuska.....it's hilarious.

  28. hahahah I love this! Miss M is so enthusiastic! Her down was so quick! I started to teach Darwin to put away her toys... maybe I should start that up again. I like the wave command. I think I'll work on that one too!

  29. Holy smokes Ms. M is a talented lady! Mom has ideas now..oh no. Maybe we could just hire her for our house?

  32. I can't wait to hear how you trained her to clean up! That's so awesome! I second that your place is super clean. I bet it doesn't even smell like dog! I have 3 pitties and use the excuse that I have dogs and that's why my house is dirty....but really I'm just busy and lazy! :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. That is adorable. I can't wait for you to post the details of how to teach that!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hahahahahahahhaha! Oh that was sooo great! Ms. M and Mr. B look so quaint in their kerchiefs BOL! I luved how she'd try and just throw some in the corner first Too funny :D Mr. B has the job I want...Supervisor ;)

Um, not gonna let Mom see this one though. She might get the idea that I should work harder for MY treats :O

  35. Honest to God, I could never get my kids to clean up their stuff and there you are with a dog that does. So much for my parenting skills. Maybe if I'd made them wear babushkas...

  36. What does she charge for a 1,900-square foot home? And is she willing to travel to Oklahoma?

  37. BTW, we were meeting with our trainer several weeks ago and I was talking about how Clover is so naturally pawsy and she suggested putting a command to it. So now she does "Say Bye-Bye". I was teaching it to her and Snuggles slowly started doing it, too, just by watching her. Like, HEL-LOOOO, Mom, I can totally do this one, too.

  38. how are your pups this cute - those babushkas! ah!

  39. What a fabulous trick. Our house usually looks like the toy box threw up all over the place. I must teach this! Can not wait to see your "how to" post.

  40. As I sit here and look at my lazy ass dog snoozing on the couch, Ms. M is diligently cleaning up all her own toys. Sheesh, she sure makes all other dogs look bad. I love the part where Mr. B is going through his tricks in the hopes that he will get a treat. And at the end, Ms. M is like, "come on, lady! That last toy is ALMOST in the bin. That's not good enough for you?" And I agree with other comments that Ms. M needs to show off her skills on TV!
