Chicagoing: Hibernation

We take full advantage of our summers in Chicago because we know how long and terrible the winters can be. Since we've arrived home last week, winter has been in full-throttle and we've all been happy holed-up inside the house.Miss M was reluctant to leave the house, even to go to the bathroom.
We do have a weekend winter routine. We load the pooches up, and Mr B brings his backpack, to head over to our favorite bakery to pick up some freshly-baked bread.
The talented E makes "flights" of grilled cheese sandwiches; each sandwich has a different combination of cheeses which we eat with tomato soup:
The pooches are captivated by the falling snow:
And the burning fire:
I'm hoping our routine can hold out until Spring before we get stir-crazy. Anyone else have fun hibernation rituals?

  1. We spend as much time snuggling as we possibly can! Flash loved all the snow yesterday and it's hilarious to watch her bound through it! Ollie could care less though!

And to answer your question, yes, I believe each of them has fallen off the back of the couch at some point. Usually when it happens, they try and make it look like they jumped off. But, I know one time, D said Flash just rolled off and hit the floor like a ton of bricks!

  5. We so wish we had one of those nice fire place things to look at. We just have to snuggle closer to Mom and Dad.

  6. We get in serious snuggle mode here too. We even break out the electric blanket! The pits love it.

  7. That looks cozy. A nice fire and grilled cheese!
It's not that cold here right now, so we are still living the outdoorsy life.

  8. Wasn't the snow this weekend pretty?

We like putting the slow cooker on and making a big pot of soup. It's so nice to enjoy it after you've gone out for a long walk in the snow or have been running errands all day. Tonight we'll be having Albondigas, also known as Mexican Meatball Soup.

  9. this looks so very cozy . . . can i come over?
we've just moved into our house this summer so we don't have a routine yet, but ours will certainly involve snuggly fireside wonderdogs, walks wearing special dog hoodies, and burrowing into the custom sleeping bag i made for chick last winter!

  10. Yesterday we made waffles and english muffins, made a fire and played on the Wii for hours. It was nice to at least move about in the house, the cold cutting short much outdoor activity. That fire and those yummies look fantastic!!

  11. OOh, the grilled cheeses look particularly good.
My two pups like to burrow under the covers while I am getting ready for work and act like I can't see them. I let them get a good nap in before I have to give them the boot.

  17. Your pictures inspired me to FINALLY call a chimney repair person to tell us what it would take to get ours going again.

    Hmmmmm........fireplace.........

  18. What Emma wouldn't give for a fireplace like that! We have tiled, cold floors, but I can't put down rugs 'cus the bunny and visiting puppies will pee on it, so she runs from bed to bed. She also has to wear a minimum of 3 jackets when going outside, and still shivers a bit. I've never had her for winter before, so it will be an adventure! Charlie loves the snow, though it gets stuck to his fur and makes painful ice balls.

  19. We have been cold but we insist on going out and still get exited.
Then we have a nice meal then a sleep.
I notice you paths are clear, we are sliping all over on ours .

Would I be able to contact you via email? I have a few questions about the rescues that you got your pitties from - I'm trying to place a special needs pittie and I'm not sure who to contact. my email is prochnow@illinois.edu.

thank you! love the blog :)

  21. We are already tired of winter and it hasn't even snowed here yet. How much longer until spring?

  22. Yum, those grilled cheese sandwiches look fantastic! And with tomato soup, just perfect! The snow was real pretty - at least coming down and before it started to urbanize. It's cute to see the dogs watching the snow, though that look on Miss M's face having to go outside is priceless!

  24. I know it is COLD. Pip pretty much refuses to go out in this weather. I can't say I blame him. Stay warm!

  25. The fire looks cozy and the grilled cheeses yummy! If I wasn't having leftover crockpot chili (which is actually really good), I'd probably be having the same thing. And the dogs would be happier then, because they could have a taste, and the chili is too spicy for them! Stay warm!

  26. That fire looks like heaven, tomato soup and grill cheese a winter time favorite.

We shift the dogs to the park on the lake for walks because they keep their sidewalks clear - thank goodness!

We get into some serious chill-en time around here. Movies, reading, small projects but the best is retreating to our bedroom with all the animals and watching movies in bed.

  27. Those cheese sandwiches sure look yummE. We hear it is awfully cold there. Better to stay inside for awhile

  28. Darwin: Mr. B wears the Ruff Wear Palisades dog pack. Miss M also has a backpack that might be more Darwin size; it's still Ruff Wear, but it comes with the hydration pack. We like it because whenever Mr B wears the backpack he turns into Mr. Serious, like he's on a mission, and he doesn't play around. It's a good training tool, and when filled with heavy stuff it helps tire him out.

  29. Well the weather outside may be frightful but it sure looks delightful inside your home :)

A cozy fire, two cool humans, super special furiends and GOURMET TOASTED CHEESE SANDWICHES?! Yeah, I'm there :D

  30. In wintertime I'm ALL for the comfort food...grilled cheese is going to be playing a big part of it this winter. I like to make home made peppery tomato soup and fatty mayo grilled cheese on toast to mop it up. And then lie in a blanket in front of the fire with a good book!

  31. Oh that fire looks so inviting! We hate to go potty outside in the cold too!
