SociaBulls: Historic Parks in Winter

Even though we know how bad Chicago winters can be, our SociaBulls group has decided to continue walking until the temperatures become unbearable. Especially since we all have to walk our dogs anyway, it's much more fun doing so with your 20 favorite dog friends--and working in extra socialization.
The adorable pooch at the top who joined us is adoptable dog Ferris from New Leash on Life. He came to work on his pack walking skills as he waits for his forever family. Isn't he gorgeous? I don't think it's possible for this guy to take a bad photo.
Psst..this handsome guy is available and looking for a foster or forever home in the Chicago area.
Our walk took us back through one of our favorite urban gems. Here the geese stay in the water and we're able to enjoy the amazing architecture and lagoons and we hardly feel like we're in the city.
It was so great to see all our former members, and to welcome new members Penny and Jax.We loved meeting Penny's family who were so excited to come even though they are really, really close to having a new baby soon. And Jax who just moved from Nashville last week and is excited to meet new dog friends here in Chicago. We get to meet the most fascinating people in our group, and it's always amazing to see everyone's dedication to working with their dogs.
Like true Chicagoans, we're going to keep walking until it gets really cold. We have started a Chicago SociaBulls facebook page here to keep everyone updated.
Interested in joining?  Email Chicagosociabulls.com to tell us how you heard about SociaBulls and a bit about your pooch.

Do winter walks mean we'll see more dogs in coats and sweaters? The cuteness will be overwhelming!

Izzy was bummed to have missed this walk - especially having friends walking in her very own 'hood! See you soon!

I'm not sure about pitties, they look like they might be more of a warm weather breed - but Jessie was never happier than when it was about 20 degrees with a brisk wind. I have photos of her curled up and napping in the snow in the back yard when we lived in Duluth (not because she lived in the yard, just to be clear, she shared the "grad school suite" with me). That's when I realized that German Shepherds are much better suited for Duluth Minnesota, than Knoxville TN, which is where we were living before grad school. When it was below zero she wore booties and had to depend on my working up the wherewithal to go outside with her. But she loved the cold!

It must be cold when it looks freezing

Most of my hounds don't care for the cold but I find 14 y/o Sheila Sheltie going out in the rain and sleeping in the breezeway in the cool/cold rather than the house! Will be up some weekend just to walk :).

What a handsome fellow up for adoption! I love all your pics... Looks like you had a great walk.

Quick Question... I know you said you had little booties for the pups... Do you still use them? I just saw the disposable ones in the store and I thought of you guys. I have never used shoes for my two but I think it's a great idea... Especially for the snow melt stuff on the sidewalk and the ice. Do you think they need something for warmth? I never thought I'd dress my pups but they def do need jackets when it gets so cold. But like you said in a previous post the muttluks fall off so I don't really think a good product exists that will keep their feet warm. I think I'll try the disposable ones for the salt and all. Do you think their feet will be ok for an hour walk even if there is snow on the ground! Just curious and I know you're a wealth of experienced information :-)

Thank you!!

Hi Rachel--I feel the boot thing is so hard, and something we keep coming back to. You're right, when I first bought Miss M her fancy Muttluks, they kept falling of on our walk and they just took so long to put on. We started using the disposable balloon-type boots, which I like because they prevent their feet from the salt and ice growing between their toes. The only thing that's bad is if the boots rip (which has happened to us) all that stuff collects in the boot and they're basically walking in a pile of snow and mud attached to their feet. Someone was just telling me about Mushers Balm which is what they use for sled dogs. Definitely not for keeping warm, but it's supposed to prevent the ice and salt from hurting their feet. I think we might try it and do a post later. And here is last year's snowshoe post (complete with our pooches walking around like ducks!): http://pittiesincity.blogspot.com/2011/02/pooches-quest-for-perfect-snow-boots.html

Good for you guys - braving the Chicago winters! We'll hope you get unseasonable warm weather for your walks. That pup looking for his forever family is a real cutie!

I LOVE the pictures!!!! And I think Ferris looks a lot like Zoe....!

Oh, and we use Musher's Secret for Zoe, and it works well. She doesn't like the booties, so this is the best compromise. I do, however, think it's a good idea to bring along a little extra so you can reapply during the walk, if needed.

Oh it will be so much better doing the big Sunday walk when it's not dark and in a pack. I think even Summer will agree to that! Thanks for keeping SociaBulls going this winter.

It shouldn't take too long to find your forever home. Who could resist that sweet face?
