DoggyStyle: "Deck Dogs" Dog Door Screen

We used to feel guilty that our dogs didn't have a backyard, but then we realized our dogs have something else. They are "Deck Dogs".
Since half of our year is spent like this, we make sure to spend as much time as possible outdoors. What was once a smallish deck has now become an alfresco dining room/ herb gardenoutdoor lounge /movie theatre.  Which also happens to be very pooch-friendly.
The pooches love sitting in our isolated area outdoors among the floor pillows (Glamping!), among the flowers and foliage, and the perfect views to see what the neighbors are up to.
Though we did find one small way to improve.
We recently discovered this magic mesh instant screen door which makes the pooches' indecisiveness less annoying. The screen is split, and held together by a magnet so it closes behind them without letting in any bugs, and they don't need to depend on us to keep opening and closing the screen door. It's also helpful for us when we're carrying plates off food outside and we don't have a free hand to open the door.

What other ways do you make your outdoor space dog-friendly?

BOL - we gave up on it! Monty is sort of a one dog, tree killing, grass grazing, yard wrecking machine... We just quit fighting it and let him have his way. It helped our sanity!

I bought one of those screens last summer, and I absolutely LOVE it! I can keep the balcony door open all day without letting the bugs in. It creates great air flow and also lets the dog enjoy some fresh air whenever he pleases. I would recommend these to anyone, but especially renters.

I bought the Magic Mesh and though it was great for the first 2 days. Rosie is like a bull in a china shop. Unfortunately the mesh got caught on her collar and it was ripped to shreds. Oh well, I guess the Magic Mesh wasn't pitbull friendly in my home. Rosie has her own pillow on my desk. I also have a hammock where she lounges just about all day. I have to bring her in at night otherwise she would sleep outside.

Nala loves spending time on our balcony taking in the sights and sounds (and smells) of the city! The problem is being 12 floors up facing Lake Michigan we can get some serious wind whipping through, making things such as herb gardens and rugs impossible to keep out of fear of killing someone on the street. I should look into those floor pillows that you have, I could easily keep them inside and take them out when Nala wants to enjoy the outdoors!

Hmmm...given Hurley's tendency to bust through screens, maybe I should invest in the Magic Mesh...

I brought Athena to my grandparent's house this past weekend and they have a Magic Mesh screen and she was terrified of it!

I bet it's nice to have to give the pooches easy access to the inside and outside!

After my dogs busted through my screen & tore it. I bought the replacement screen and only attached it at the top so they could easily go in and out on the patio. This magic screen though sounds much better with the magnets! I'll have to check it out.

I've been wondering about that Magic Mesh - glad to hear it really works.

Love the deck photos!

I don't have experience with the Magic Mesh; however, we bought a Bug Off screen door several years ago (they were the first company with this concept). They *claim* to be strudier than Magic Mesh, but I wouldn't know. I can say that our first one lasted about 4 years until finally one day Bonnie's toenail caught it during a zoomie session and ripped the bottom. I thought that was pretty good longevity as we live in So Cal so it is in use pretty much 365 days a year except when it rains - certainly better (and more convenient than the old screen slider). I dunno if it helps or not but we leave the spring bar just loose enough so I can insert it without getting a hernia - this may have an advantage because every now and then when some body races through it, it falls down. Does this prevent tearing as well, I dunno.

Bug Off screens are more expensive, but are available cheaper on Amazon. I'd be interested in hearing from someone who's tried or seen both.

Oh, I have been so hoping some one would try and write about the Magic Mesh... we've been thinking about trying it, but we weren't sure if it was worth it. You've done great things with your deck. It kind of puts our whole yard to shame!
