Dog Gear: Review of Canada Pooch Dog Coats (and a GIVEAWAY!--CLOSED)

Even with winter temperatures rivaling those at the South Pole, we still need to be out there walking our pups.  And with short-haired pups who absolutely hate the cold-weather, it has become our mission to find coats and gear to keep them warm.
Though finding coats for large, chesty dogs has become a mission in itself, and sometimes we found ourselves just needing to settle.
We had been searching, unsuccessfully, for a hooded coat that actually came in our dogs' sizes, and we were beyond excited to discover  Canada Pooch Parkas.
Canada Pooch is a Canadian company working to design coats that are as fashionable as they are warm. Even though they sound similar to the Canada Goose company, they are not at all connected and Canada Pooch does not use any animal products in its coats.
Canada Pooch was nice enough to send our pups two different types of parkas to try out:

North Pole Parka
Mr. B tried out the North Pole Parka; a dog-version of a an urban puffy coat. The coat is extra-thick with a fleece lining, and waterproof materials. It has extra details like a pocket in the back and a button to hold the hood back and keep it out of our pups' faces if they're not using it. We also liked the contrast of the black ribbing on the arms and back. Besides Mr. B's purple, this coat also comes in light blue, red, black and burnt orange.

Winter Wilderness Jacket
Miss M's coat has many of the same details: extra padding, fleece lining, back pocket, and a button to hold the hood back. Her coat is made with a heavy-canvas type of material that feels really thick and is also waterproof. The Winter Wilderness Jacket comes in black, navy, red...and Miss M's staple hot pink.
We like that overall, both of the coats feel really heavy and durable.
The coats both have velcro closures, which we find works for our general walks and promenades, though we are not sure how well velcro would hold up over time or with more active play.
Our dogs both wear a size 26.
Canada Pooch doesn't have a direct online store, but you can use their store locator to find out stores near you, and learn more about them, here.
If there is not a store near you: Here are some online options. Some of these are Canadian online stores, but they will ship to the U.S. and some are based in the U.S. as well:
1. Frontgate: http://www.frontgate.com/storm-slicker-dog-raincoat/455864 2. Well: http://well.ca/products/canada-pooch-torrential-tracker_68473.html 3. We know these coats will make Chicago's never-ending winter much more bearable, and we are extra excited that Canada Pooch has offered to give away gift certificates to two lucky pups to win Canada Pooch jackets!
There are two ways to enter and each person can enter two times.
We love taking our pups for promenades, winter walks, and jaunts with our friends.
What new things would you do with your pooch if you won a Canada Pooch coat?

Congratulations to our winners:

Love Ms M in that hot pink! I also like that the hoodies have the faux fur lining!

Wow - these look awesome! Mr B and Miss M wear them well. They look so warm! We are currently doing the two-coat layer for Cooper, and he'd love to be able to go for longer walks with a warmer coat. Plus, I know he'd love the hood as a fashion statement ;-)

What wonderful coats - can never find anything warm enough here for our long hikes and snowplay.

Those Canadians - always coming up with the most wonderful winter gear. I know Walter would love to sport such a coat on his walk here in Ann Arbor-tica. Almost as cold as what Ms. M and Mr. B have experienced in Chi-beria.

This winter is really getting to us! My woof Charger doesn't need a coat, he loves the cold and crazy snow, but his short haired pibble brother Odin lives next door and he really needs a warmer coat. We want to win it for him so the boys can take their walks together again!

We've had one heck of a time finding a good fitting coat for our new pup Gizmo. If we had a nice warm coat like this we'd be able to go on nice long walks!

These coats are adorable!! My guy would love one of these! I love your pup's awesome style!

We are currently sharing our one puffy coat between Ray and Julius because it is so hard to find a jacket that will fit a Pit. We've recently begun begging our talented friend to make fleece jackets for the boys, but if we won this what could we do? We could take both boys out at the same time!

Joanie Hoffman said...

We would take longer walks! Thanks for the giveaway.

Love the coats! We would be able to go all over downtown and probably get a lot of attention, since everyone is always commenting on our Pawz booties! We would stay warm in the awful Chicago winter! ~Molly & Annie

Love love love them!!
I have two pitties one male one female ~ I would get to take them out more in the sub zero days if we had cool jackets like this!! Keeping them and myself in better shape!

I also would be SO jealous of their cool jackets that i would have to look for one to match!!

Hannah said...

Those coats are awesome! If we won one, Widget could spend more time outside with her horsey-big-brother! It's much easier to find winter gear to fit the horse than the big-chested dog!

I don't know if we'd do anything new but I hope he'd be more comfortable. My little terrier/pug/chi mix is miserable in all this cold weather and I'm a constant quest to find the perfect coat to make his necessary walks bearable. Love these parkas!

stellanite said...

These are awesome! I like how they have more coverage on the belly area, lots of jackets I've seen don't (and my Nova has barely any hair on her belly!)

These coats look fabulous! Vinnie currently wears a Ruffwear K9 Overcoat on cold/wet days, but he has gained 5 pounds of chest muscle since we moved into a house with a yard where he can run, and now he's suffering from a bit of "FGIALC" (fat guy in a little coat) syndrome. If he won a new coat, not only would he be happier and more comfortable on cold Walking Group walks, we'd also be able to donate the Ruffwear coat to a pooch in need. Thanks for your consideration!

My dog would looooove a new coat!

Andrea Joy said...

These coats look great! Beau might actually romp in the snow for more than 10 minutes with one of these on!

Unknown said...

These look great on your pups, so stylish. We've been having a bad winter her in NJ, not just lots of snow, but brutal cold. My boxer and pittie are both chesty so we have the same issue finding coats that fit. We would love to find a warmer coat so we can stay out longer for walks and playtime.

Unknown said...

These coats are AWESOME my Mr Tank hates this cold and loves wearing coats but none seem to actually work in -26 :( would LOVE to put one of these to the test :)

Rachel said...

What beautiful coats! I love that they don't use animal products. I love that the coats have hoods- If we won, I would love to take the pups out more in the snow and rain because maybe then my precious girl would venture out if the droplets of water didn't get on her head!

Laura said...

Belle and Clarke are not fond of the Chicago Polar Vortex ... the coat might make it slightly more tolerable for them!

Unknown said...

Oh goodness, these coats are absolutely adorable!! I LOVE that they have a hood, too! Our two pitties' walks get cut short because their ears get too cold and we can't seem to find a way to keep them warm. Needless to say they never seem to get enough exercise in the winter. If we won a coat we could finally go snowshoeing, go on longer hikes, and maybe even have a playdate outside in this tundra Fargo, ND weather!! :)

OG said...

Love the first picture of Mr. B! Like the DomesticGoddesse we have to resort to the 2 layer option (plus scarf and boots) here in NYC!

Love that the coats have a back pocket and can hold the hood back. I tried to put my first grade hot on Petey but that was not a success

Jennifer said...

Love your pups, we ran into you on the street last weekend and they looked so warm! We adopted our pit mix on the second day of "chiberia". He hates the cold and one of these would be perfect!

My pit mix Sookie is also a fan of hot pink! If we had this coat we would be able to take longer walks & hikes up here in chilly New England!

brian and kim said...

Oo that would be great! Cold weather has been bad this week in Colorado so we'd love one so we could do walks again!

My Dog Barry said...

Barry would love a coat that fits him properly across the chest! His muscles and deep chest make it so hard to get a good comfy coat for him. He hates the one we make him wear now - the velcro comes undone 30 seconds into our walks so they are kept short on very cold days because it doesn't cover him up well.

We could take walks all around the West Loop! There is a nice park we could take Barry to instead of the usual quick route. He'd love to be outside longer if he had a coat that covered him up!

Lauren said...

I would take him out more because this would keep him warm and dry!

sweetemaline said...

OOoooh! With the 10+ inches of snow we got this week, it would be nice to have a nice, warm coat to send the dogs outside in (especially since our Zack & Zoey hoodies get wet so fast!

Wow these look really warm Joker would be so excited to have this hes been needing a better winter jacket his current one is a little beat up from his buddy pulling it off lol But i think that we could start going on longer walks again if we had something like this and that would be awesome we both miss em.

Hannah@Eriesistibull said...

Yay! We love those jackets! We need jackets for the pooches so much of the year and it would be great to have one that is so stylish!! It would make those cold walks so much more fun!

Kellee the Caffeinated said...

Those are awesome!!!! Looks so nice and toasty!

Unknown said...

I guess go for more winter walks, we are bad about that... :( We don't like the cold ! But jackets will help the little babies stay warmer!!

Julia said...

We would go for longer walks. My pooch has thin fur and doesn't understand walking with boots on (she's a simple dog...) so at least I can try to keep her body warm!

Unknown said...

I love your blog and your dog-coat reviews! I have found it very challenging to find a good, warm coat that fits my pitty princess properly! It's pretty cold here 6 months of the year, and we could get out for a lot more walks and winter fun in a Canada Pooch parka ;)

Meagan said...

My pittie Chopper is ready for warmer weather that's for sure. These coats are perfect! I'm gonna recommend them to all my friends with pits. :)

Sharon said...

Breece, the AmStaff who shares my life, would be able to have longer walks and walks on colder and snowier days than we have now. She's made of sturdy stuff and walks now without a coat, because she's so chesty and it's hard to find something to fit her! I think she would love the hot pink, and it would make her safer on the road as well!

Unknown said...

We would love to have a fancy jacket! I had to fancy a sweater out of a thriftstore sweater because I couldn't find anything for a reasonable amount of money to fit my sausage-shaped pittie.

Heather said...

Luckily, I have a backyard for my poor dog. Unluckily, we haven't gone on an actual walk in ages because it's just too cold for him! And like your pups, I have a really hard time finding something that fits his chest. One of these coats would be fantastic.

Keri said...

The pups always look SO cute all bundled up! Little Dylan (our newest rescue and a little 40 pound pocket pit) has no fur on her belly and very short hair – she doesn’t even like to go out in the backyard when it’s cold! With a new coat, she would be able to go on longer walks with us and her sister Nala…and it would protect her these next 2 months as she finishes her last round of heartworm treatment. She’s really groggy and sedated right now, so a new coat would be a nice way to keep her warm and cozy while she’s sick.

Playing with the Big Dogs said...

I would be able to walk my dog I have a pit bull who refuses to go outside other than to potty. We have a basic coat for her and its just not enough.
Your pups look super warm!

Tenacious Little Terrier said...

Be able to take pictures in the snow! Despite layering yesterday, my pup started shivering when I asked him to pose for photos.

Ekstaton said...

My Riley likes to sit in the horse barn while I clean stalls. He would be able to supervise his mama's stall cleaning skills so much better if he had a great jacket to keep him warm!

Dachshund Nola said...

We'd take more winter beach walks (the wind coming off the water can be frigid!)!

Song of the Day said...

Finally, a coat that fits a pit! I never been able to find a good-fitting coat for my girl Lilly. She loves the snow but this winter has been so cold, she doesn't stay outside as long as she used to. If I won this coat for her, we would have a snowball fight. She loves to catch & eat them!

Unknown said...

My pittie mix currently sports one of my husbands thermal shirts on our walks. His sparse white coat just isn't enough to keep him warm this winter, even with those adorable black spots on his skin. He/we would love a new jacket to show off and keep him warm on our winter walks.

Unknown said...

I love these, I might have to get one for my Gretta regardless! Thank you for sharing this company!

We are having issues getting her to go on a walk for a longer time then just around the block, but when she gets back inside, and warmed up, she wants to go back out again. Maybe with a coat like this, we can stay outside in this Chicago cold for LONGER, which I think would make us all a lot happier!!!

Unknown said...

My little pit would love these coats! She is forever rotating through coats/sweaters with all of her romping outside. I love seeing all of the products you guys try out!

The Black Dog Lodge said...

Love the kids in their hot pink and purple coats :)

If we won we would have go out on the town to show off our cool new duds!

nscook said...

It's almost impossible to find warm dog coats in larger sizes where we live, and ordering online is always a crapshoot for Blitz. He is my granddog, a 5 yr old Staffordshire.

Unknown said...

Chance Yehuda loves walks in all types of weather. I watch him shiver and continue to confidently stride down the streets of Portland. While he may think he is fine, I worry about his warmth on these cold days.

Unknown said...

These look comfy toasty warm. I have been looking for a doggie-coat that would fit my Teeka but I can't seem to find one big enough for her. With the cold and the wind chill, our walks are extremely short.

jane said...

If we had this new coat for our pittie, Frankenstien, we'd be able to get him to take more than 2 steps out the door to go potty before running back inside!

Unknown said...

Rocky would love one of these coats! He's rather big-chested as well, so finding a durable (and adorable) coat is nearly impossible! He needs something warm to keep up with his little chunk pug sister.

Jenna Z said...

Oh MY gosh, that picture with Miss M's hood up is adorable!! Puptacular!

Unknown said...

The coats look great on Miss M an Mr B.
I would love one for my puppy Piper she is a American Bulldog/ so her fur is really short and she gets cold in these cold temps we've been having in GA. No, GA's weather isn't as cold as some, but for Piper it's cold enough to make her shiver. I would take longer and more walks if I got the coat.

Jojo's human said...

Jojo would love a winter coat with a hood !

We love going hiking but he gets so cold since he's not a fan of all the layers he has to wear now

Susan said...

My little Shih Tzu self would be nice a warm when I go back to visit the East Coast from CA if I had a puffy coat!

Unknown said...

A warm and waterproof coat generally means longer walks!

Chill Out Spartacus said...

Spartacus is moving to Chicago in a few months! He's a bully mix and starts to shiver in 30 degree temperatures. At the same time, he can't imagine walking any less than 3 miles a day so a coat would certainly help him adjust to Chicago living. Matching Mr.B's style never hurts.

Unknown said...

OK. I have to admit that it does not get that cold here in the coastal NC. We did have some snow (2 inches) a few weeks ago. And, we are going to have some more snow tomorrow (2 inches)! Sabra, a sweet puppy at Carteret County Humane Society wants to look special in the next adoption event. She really likes Ms. M's city style. Please see Sabra's orange tutu on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMERdde8_mg

Sasha, who enjoyed the cooler weather and LOVED the snow, now gets cold. She's got no muscle on her left leg and even though she can't used that leg much, she still manages to get around on 2 legs!

We take her out for 'walks' in a garden cart...I layerd it with moving blankets and then cover her, but she's still a little cold.

Winning the coat would allow her to stay warmer when we take her out and about in her cart, and its something we wont stop doing because she enjoys it SO much.

MammaMonkey86 said...

Greyson would actually be able to go outside when we get to our new home in Montana!!!

Kaitlin Jenkins said...

Oh this looks like an amazing coat for our senior boy Bear. He's starting to have a hard time keeping on weight and staying warm when the temps dip

Kristen said...

Your dogs are the FANCIEST!!! :) I have two dogs and ONE dog coat, which always goes on my senior dog, Belle. I think her brother could use one too, especially here in MinneSNOWta.

How much does your boxer weigh? My girl weighs 70 so I ordered a 26 but now I'm afraid it might be too big :/

Two Pitties in the City said...

@Ashley and Maggie to Boxer Beauty: I think you should be fine with the 26. Our pups are both about 65 pounds; Miss M is more boxer size and Mr. B is shorter and sturdier and they both wear the 26 and still have a bit of room. Send us a picture of your pup in the coat!

Hi there! I love these coats but am wondering what the girth measurement is? My pups are 30 inches around.
