I was just reading in a magazine that 94% of pet owners speak to their pets.
In our home, we speak to our pooches all the time. Much to the dismay of A, I'm usually singing to the pooches. I usually make up my own lyrics to random songs that happen to be in my head. Since we have NPR on a lot, most of my songs are based on the NPR jingles played before and after shows.
Though we like to believe that we have deep conversations with the pooches, in reality they are just a few phrases that we ask or yell at the pooches. Here are some of the more common things heard in our home:
Oftentimes when we are getting ready for bed, we find Miss M laying comfortably on one of the beds in the bedroom, but Mr. B is no where to be found.
On these nights, you can hear us yelling, "Let's go to bed, Mr. B!" If we do find him, there have been times that he just looks at us and continues to lay in Miss M's crate
and other times it looks like he just awoke from deep slumber with his ears all crooked.
Rarely do the pooches interact, but when guests are over, it is a completely different story. This is when Miss M decides to grab one of Mr. B's stuffy and start thrashing it all around as Mr. B stares in horror.
We start yelling at her to remind her that "that is Mr. B's toy" but she doesn't care. When she gets distracted, Mr. B takes that opportunity to run and grab his stuffy, but then Miss M thinks that he wants to play tug and soon the stuffy is being tugged and torn.
We often have to grab the stuffy out of Miss M's mouth and remind her that "that is Mr. B's toy" and he is off taking the stuffy into tepee for safe haven.
Right before we go for a walk, Mr. B decides that it is the best time to run around the house and grab a stuffy to take on the walk.
He will grab the stuffy and run at full speed towards the leash, which is usually held by one of us humans. For some reason he hasn't gotten the handle of hardwood floors and he will try to stop just short of bowling us over, but all he does is slide into our legs and then bowl us over.
A few times when I have been sitting, he have tried to hop over my legs only to land on my lap. As you can imagine, we are yelling "STOP running, you can't bring the stuffy on the walk!!!"
The most common phrase heard in our house is "What, Miss M?!"
For unknown reasons, Miss M will walk around the house verbally complaining. We ask her that question and she looks at us as if we should know the answer.
There are other times when she is praying on the ground or staring at us just looking miserable.
During all of these times, we cannot help but as her "What, Miss M?!"
What are some common phrases heard around your home?

lol, too funny.
I'd like to say that our foster dogs are made out of sugar and all the sweet stuff, but most of the time they're naughty and learning the house rule.
My common phrase is: "Stop looking for trouble, you already are in trouble!" "Drop it, he needs his leg!" "You better not be chasing the chis!" (chis/chihuahuas)
Very funny! Two of Ray's favorite phrases that I say to him are "Do you want..." or "Would you like..." both are usually followed by the words "bully stick" or "cookie" and both phrases make his ears perk up.
I talk to Rosie all the time. Its usually related to treats or walks. I always ask for kisses and I always get them. I am a firm believer that they do understand what we are saying.
LOVE this post! I talk to Petey all the time! I often say "What?" in response to his look. And I often ask him where I've put something when I can't find it. He has yet to tell me.
I have found that talking out loud about what is going on (ie. going upstairs, going to kitchen, your bed, etc) has helped the boys learn their tricks. I can say upstairs to your bed, and off Melvin goes. Jake of course just stairs at me since English is apparently not his primary language. My words of choice for be good: "make good decisions". Saying this forces them to look at me and hopefully interrupts a bad choice!
This post is hilarious and it reminds me that I'm not crazy. Luna is bilingual, she speaks Spanish and English with Spanish being her first language so what you hear in my house is often, "Quien quiere papa?" Who wants to eat?, or "Donde esta mi petite bebe?" Where is my little baby?, or a random song that my niece made up that both my boyfriend and I sing to her, Looney, Tooney Macarooni, Macarooni, Macarooni, Looney, tooney and we dance together. This is usually to get her pumped up because we're going to the beach or some other fun place.
"Damn it Jack" - Jack is our old cat that is constantly in trouble for leaving gross presents.
"Shut up Stella" Stella is also an old cat, that is starving.
"Poor Mr Boo" Blu is our misunderstood pitty that is the constant target of attacks from Jack. He is also has horrible itchy allergies, and is usually somehow injured.
"Gentle with Fudgie's tail" Our kid (11 months) thinks Fudge, our oldest pitty's tail is the most amazing toy ever.
I talk ALL the time to them. In fact, I'm certain my Brooklyn neighbors think I'm insane. When they pull me on the walk I say, "Oh, no, that's not gonna work for me." And my pit foster Loretta looks up at me like, "Huh?"
And much of my talk to Stewart revolves around coaxing him outside as laying between pillows is his preferred method of exercise.
HAhaha.....we have a similar comment to Annie, but it's "Ms. Butt?" said in varying tones. Paul get's talked to more often about the "serious" stuff because he listens to commands more. Annie, being a hound, just looks at us blankly.
In our house it's "What are you eating!" as our little staffie bull, Bunny, is always picking up stuff off the floor.
Our big guy is very vocal and will sit in his crate or on his mat and "talk" to us. So you'll also hear a lot of "what baby boy?"
Mr. B's faces are so priceless! We often just make up little songs for the dogs about what they are doing. Like "Oh Mobe-aaaaa-Lobe, why do you bark at the wall?" I am sure our neighbors think we are crazy!

I love this post, I can't help but smile at such cute faces!
I also like to sing to my pups, I make up all sorts of lyrics, sometimes it's just their names over and over again and they wiggle and get all excited.
But we have tons of words that get their attention and get them going too.
The phrases most heard in this house are "what are you doing, Jay bird?", "I love you buddy", and "come here, babe", all usually in my "dog voice", haha!
Blueberry has the same penchant for whining as Miss M. "What's the matter, baby Blue?" is heard a lot. Along with "Kuster, be quiet!"
is some buddy hoarding?
Snuggles,
Benny & Lily

PS. Mom talks to us all the time, too. I'm glad this is a "normal" human habit. :)
Most common phrase lately is something like, "Shelby stop" and she growls (non-aggressively) when another dog wants to get a toy. For some reason she has taken ownership of all toys in the house and when one of the dogs gets one, she just stares and patiently waits for a distraction to steal it back!
I sing to everyone in the pack, except the human :) Also, (this is embarrassing), I pretend Tommy talks, and he is quite funny and a smarty pants :) If I knew (or would learn)how to make animations, I would use Tommy. A children's book or animation would be cool!
