Pooches: The One Where Miss M and Mr B Move (But Still Live in the City)

This past month we've taken a bit of an unexpected hiatus as we've been caught in a whirlwind of paperwork, misplaced cameras and unplugged internet as we've managed to sell our condo and buy a new place.
Just last week it all ended as we were able to pack up our pups and move into our very own single-family home (without shared floors or walls!) in the city.
While we only moved a mere mile north and west, neighborhoods vary a lot in the city. We're excited to be part of our new community where many of our neighbors have lived for decades. There are a lot of pitbull-type dogs, and our next door neighbors even have a Mr. B look-alike.
The pups are still getting used to the changes like having 2 sets of stairs
And a new window to people-watch:
Miss M has adjusted quite well and has already found her favorite places to sleep in the house.
While poor Mr. B is still a bit confused, and he has decided to live in the bathroom.
It has made us confused too.
We are beyond excited to be in our new home, but we are still unpacking, getting settled, and helping the pups adjust by creating routines.

Anyone have any tips to share on helping pups adjust when you move?

Yay! So happy for you guys. About Mr. B, I would say, set up his teepee? I hope he settle soon.

Yeah, the teepee and his stuffies. That should help.

We just recently moved as well and I was very nervous about Nola because she had ONLY lived in our old house. We made sure to unpack things that smelled like the old house first (their beds, blankets, toys, etc.) and set up their areas first. We tried to keep our sleeping and eating routines so the pups would feel more comfortable. It took a little while, but we've been in our new house for close to three months and they both seem pretty well adjusted. Good luck and congrats on the new home! Can't wait to see pics!

Leroy has moved twice since he came to live with me, and as long as his couch has been there, he's adjusted fine. Okay, he's fine with me being there, too.

Your little guys are so cute! I just love them.
We moved about eight months ago and our mild-mannered, middle-aged pit bull, whose only fear in life has been coffee mugs (after an accidental "Whatcha drinking?"), was so scared of the creaky wood floors that just being in the house without distraction would cause him to pant heavily, shed and shake. He would barely step off the rugs - though even on those he'd eventually start to panic - so in addition to lots of attention and playtime outside, we made a path of rugs and unpacked the pet stuff ASAP. Then after a week or two of regular routines we started getting him out of his comfort zone by throwing a toy just off the rug or calling him into a room without a rug for a cookie, starting with once a day and building up from there. It took a few weeks, but now you'd never know he was nervous about anything, ever... except coffee mugs.

Congrats on the new place! Our pup always gets anxious when we so much as move furniture in our place, let alone bring out a suitcase. He's moved a few times with me though, and the sooner his familiar stuff is around him (and not moved!), the better. Good luck and enjoy settling in!

Congratulations on your new home! Stairs can be fun/challenging for everyone. We find that every time we move, the pups put on a few pounds of treat-love. I can't wait to hear all about your new adventures!

My dogs adapted extremely well to a horrible disruption in our lives. After hurricane Katrina destroyed our house, they were in boarding over 90 minutes away from me for six weeks while I stayed with friends, we then lived in a temporary house for six months, and finally spent a few months in a camper trailer while our new home was being built. I think the boarding was very hard for them, but once we were together again they never seemed stressed. The important thing to them was that we were together, not where we were living. Good luck to you all in your new home!

They will both settle in with your support and love. A new adventure is good for both Miss M and Mr. B - they will eventually embrace this with the energy they do everything else.

Yay! So exciting! And so happy for y'all! The pups look so cute in their new home :) Hopefully they'll adjust quickly!

So exciting, congrats guys! I can't wait to hear more about the place. The best advice I can give about moving is to make sure the dogs know where the dog is to go outside, it makes potty time so much easier.

How exciting! Miss M looks like she thinks she might be part cat.

Congrats, guys! A single family home is a coup in the city. The dogs will totally adjust and love it. Good luck! Glad to see you back online,

Congratulations on the move!! Tess had a really hard time adjusting to our new house - she even ate through one of the bedroom doors her first day alone. I found putting her in a spot we hung out in a lot over the first few days (which happened to be my bedroom) helped the most when she was left home alone.

Don't wash any of their things - the familiar smells will help them adjust. Other than that, it just takes time.

I love the box photo!

Love the picture of Miss M in the box!
When I had my floors redone Petey went straight to his toy basket and took all his toys out one by one. Perhaps he was checking to see if they were all there. And he was fine after that :)
Wishing all the best in your new home and can't wait to see more pictures!

So delighted for your family! Once you unpack and the pups feel comfortable with familiar things around them, plus their walking and daily routines, they will do great. Mr. B and Miss M look adorable! Blessings to all of you in your new home!

congrats you two!!! So exciting! Roadie was very nervous when we started packing. From what we know of his life before we adopted him was that he was surrendered after his family's home foreclosed. So the boxes and change brought up some old nervous memories for him. Once we placed his bed in it's place in the house he started to settle in. Good luck to you both and to the pups.

Congrats guys! You will definitely need to do a blog post about the process.

Awesome! Can't wait to see more pictures but it looks beautiful! Kaya and Norman were thrilled when we moved since we went from a studio apartment to a big house with a yard:)

We've done a lot of visiting to friends and families houses so I don't think it was weird for them though Norman thought the moving furniture and boxes were a bit sketchy. Keeping him in the yard while we did heavy lifting inside helped a ton.

Congrats! I bet they will come to love it. The first night in our new house last October, I packed up the boys and the three of us slept cuddledtogether on a futon on the floor. Then we made sure all of their belongings were unpacked first. They seemed to take to it right away.

Congrats on the new house! Hope Mr.B gets used to the new place soon - are all his stuffies out? Love the pictures. :)

Congratulations! How exciting for all of you! I think Mr B has found a very nice spot for himself - cool marble under his belly and quite a nice looking space if I do say so. I'm sure he'll be just fine after a week or two!

Yay you!!!!! Ahhhhh room to spread out, no shared walls! When we moved, the packing up of the old house was more stressful for Melvin than the new house. We did a new build so Melvin came out to the new house during the process. We made sure all his stuff got unpacked first and when he came to the house post move (he stayed at the vet that day), he was pretty comfortable. The biggest challenges we had were 1. the new noises (he barked a lot until he got used to them) and 2. being left alone in the new house (his sep anxiety returned and we had to recondition him again). I think he was also affected by the humans stress level and sheer exhaustion! You'll even out soon enough!

Mr B I hope you enjoy your new home. It will be so nice to not share any walls or floors with neighbors. So much more peaceful for you. Looks like you have some very big windows for your viewing pleasure.

If you hang out in the bathroom for too long someone might get the wrong idea and think you want a b-a-t-h.

Hope you and Miss M have a great time in your new home.
