Pooches: What I Wish I Knew About Dogs
I never knew what a huge responsibility it was to own a dog until I had my own as an adult. I was suddenly needing to make decisions about diet, encountering strange illnesses, and figuring out adequate exercise programs. I did a lot of trial-and-error. And I made a lot of mistakes. But I also learned some things along the way.If I were going to adopt a new dog, these are some things I would do differently:
I didn't research well enough when I got Miss M's pet insurance, and her plan under PetCare doesn't cover breed-specific conditions, which include all of her allergies and skin problems. I also had several problems with the company making claims. Several times I had to resubmit claims, and once they decided not to cover a procedure that wasn't "approved". It wasn't until I faxed back their approval letter that they suddenly found the approval in their computer.
Needless to say, E did a lot of research when choosing Mr B's insurance. We really like Trupanion which may have a higher premium, but covers all breed-specific conditions. We especially like them more than Embrace which increased our premium nearly 40% for a single year. E's research and complete write-up can be found here.
What are some things you've learned along the way that you wish you'd done earlier?

Chicagoing: The Spontaneous Picnic
The unfortunate thing is I never originally knew when "picnic inspiration" was going to strike. And it's really not quite as fun to sit in the itchy grass with a couple of restless pooches. I've learned by just tossing a couple extra things into my bag, a fun time can be had by all. In my bag I include:
1) A simple sarong: These are super lightweight, easy to smoosh into the bottom of a bag, and the perfect double for an impromptu picnic blanket.
2) The Ruff Wear Collapsible Pet Bowl. We bring our bowl with us everywhere. We love this one because it folds up really small--it too gets smooshed at the bottom of my bag--but it keeps the pooches hydrated.

Another Favorite: The Story of Miss M and the Sofa
Miss M. just loves sleeping with pillows. And despite all the different pillows and beds we buy her, they just aren't good enough. Being a bully, she is always trying to get more. And this more includes something off limits: the sofa.
Since we lived in our old place, Miss M. always wanted to sleep on the sofa. She would never do it while I was home, but when I was gone she would sneak onto the sofa, and somehow make it back to her bed by the time I was actually in the door. The following is a reenactment of what I think happened.
She would sleep on the couch, but always with one eye open in case I came home:
She likes using the sofa pillows as head pillows, so we even made a special trip to Ikea to get her some pillows. That worked for awhile, but within weeks the brindle hair was back on the sofa.
I read somewhere that if you want to keep cats off your sofa, you could put pieces of tin foil on the cushions. We decided to try it for Miss M. The first night we had the tin foil, I actually heard her leaving the room, her nails slowly clicking down the hall, then silence. A couple of minutes later I heard her clipping back to our bedroom; she had been foiled.

Pooches: I Never Wanted a Pitbull
I know I've mentioned this a couple of times before, but until I adopted Miss M, I was very adamant about not wanting a pit bull. I didn't want a dog that could be mistaken for a pit bull. I didn't want a dog that could possibly have a trace of pit bull in their genes. And I definitely didn't want a pit bull. The truth is, I had never actually met a pit bull in my life. Yet, somehow I really believed these were terrible dogs who would turn on their people and eat them. And I didn't want anything to do with them.

Pooches: Two Sick Pitties in the City
In the past two weeks, we have had the pleasure to wake up several times to vomit and diarrhea. The latest incident happened two nights ago with the sound of Mr. B dry heaving and eventually vomiting right by our bed. Then the next morning we find a nice pile of diarrhea on the runner of our front door. A few days earlier, Ms. M had explosive diarrhea, but luckily theywere all on our walks.
We were wondering what methods you recommend to treat an upset stomach.
