Scenes from Blizzaster 2011

We finally got our little snowstorm.
Our usually bustling city has become strangely eerie and silent. It's very post-apocalyptic out here.
But the dogs still need to be walked.
The storm is so bad, that they actually canceled school. They NEVER cancel public school in the city because so many of our students depend on the schools for heat and a free meal during the day. This is the first time in 12 years that school has ever been canceled. We also heard the fire department is driving around on snowmobiles.
It's still snowing out. This shows what happens when the dogs try running in their PAWS disposable reusable boots. We let them run down our gangway and Mr. B was going so fast his boots burst open like The Incredible Hulk.

After seeing your pictures, we will not complain about the little bit of snow we get around here. We did enjoy the comparison of Mr. B & the Incredible Hulk :)

Stay warm,

Amazing pictures. I thought of you guys when they announced the public school closings.

That car looks like a giant snowball.

Rob and I are home today and we have no road in front of our house. It's so strange. No public buses going past..

Neighbors to the south of us got snowed in one of their entrances to their home..

Mr. B and Miss M. look adorable and I just wanna hug them - they lost their little boots :(

Stay warm and safe guys~

Wow!! Stay warm and enjoy your day off.

like those pugs, i was thinking about you guys when i heard about the first school closing in 11 years (12 years?).

this reminds me a lot of the two blizzards dc had last year. our Chick just had no idea what to make of it all at first, but once he got the hang of it, he really enjoyed bounding through the snowbanks. it was quite a workout just going for a walk or chasing a stick!

Wow! Glad you posted the pics - we've been hearing about this on the news for days - wondered what it looked like "up close and personal." The deserted street is just bizarre. How cold is it?

OMD! That is lots and lots of snow! Did you get your mom and dad to rub your bellies to warm them up?

Wags!

I heard about the storm this morning and thought of you guys. The footage of Chicago that they showed looked insane! Stay warm and enjoy your day off!

Miss M and Mr. B look so cute bundled up in their little coats and booties. I may have to get some of those boots... we're picking up our foster pittie next week and he absolutely hates the cold!

Stay warm! :)

Your kiddos are handling it like the real city troupers that they are! We got a good amount of snow here in OKC and I have a back yard. I had to drag them out into the yard and then stand there and "remind" them why we were there. Otherwise they looked like little statues waiting for the door to open so they could fling themselves back in!!

We thought of all our Chicago friends when we heard on the news! We got the tail end of the storm, which didn't end up being as much as they though... hope you stay warm and safe!

Yep, I saw the fire department snowmobiles on the news last night. Good thing is that at least it stopped snowing here, and the sun has actually peeked its little face out! Last night I saw virtually no people walking, but I did see the girl across the street take her husky out for a walk - this morning as well when we were still getting lake effect snow. I think the husky was probably pretty much at home in the snow! Stay safe and warm and enjoy the snow day!!

I love the photo with the eight-paw traction thing going on. The looks on their faces are priceless. They are so not amused.

Sending warm thoughts from VA!

Maisie's Mom said...

Maisie likes snow on the ground but not when it's coming down so she hasn't been a very happy camper. she'll actually try to cross the street if we are walking into the wind so she can have the wind at her back instead. as of now, most of my block has yet to be shoveled and the snowdrifts in some places are too high for either of us to walk through!

HoundDogMom said...

Oh, and we thought we had it bad. It would so suck to have to actually take the dogs for a walk to do their business. It is so easy to open the backdoor and hope they don't fall in a huge snow drift. LOL. I thought of you when I seen your schools were closed for the 1st time in 12 years. Crazy GroundHog Day. Sniffs, The HoundDogs

Oh we wish we could join you on your walk. The snow is so beautiful. We heard it shut down your city and airports. Stay safe

That's pretty much what it looks like today here as well. I just got back from a walk with Shiva. Insane. At one point, I just dropped the leash and let her run around. There was no one else on the streets for it to even matter. I hope you all stay safe!

I've never been to the city during winter (I live Upstate) so it'a amazing for me to see it so quick and buried.

That last photo is too cute for words!!!

Hope you guys are keeping warm (and I hope all those kids are too)!
Love that Mr B burst his boots! hahahaha It's such a cute and funny picture!

WHOA! Lookit that! We were part of that storm, too, but we got zero, zilch, NOTHING in the way of snow. But holey macaroni! Did it even get COLD! This is our second day where our high temperature hasn't got above ZERO! And my 3rd straight day without a walkie. But that's okay with me. I just run real quick out in the back yard, zoom around for a little bit and then right back in where it's warm.

I like snow but I don't like BIG snow like that. I hope it gets warm there soon.

Wiggles & Wags,
Mayzie

I hope you are all OK! That's some serious snow. I think I'd cross my legs or hop just an inch out of the door if it was me.

Hope you're all OK. We're reading about Chicago having like a megastorm today. Our humans are just really done with winter and blizzards and snow everywhere. The two of us, however, just love it. Just stay safe and warm, all of you.

We've been thinking about you guys. Welcome to the up-to-your-doggie-armpits-in-snow club! We dodged the bullet and only got sleet and rain from this storm.

"Blizzaster." That is an awesome word.

I like how you also worked in a Hulk reference... that made me laugh :)

Keep warm!

It was crazy here, mostly yesterday. For the second time this Winter we had thunder snow.

Today we dug out in desperation and took Morgan and Bunny for a long walk, but it wasn't long enough for Morgan! Tomorrow is supposed to be brutally cold, too. Stay warm and dry!

wow, that is a lot of snow! at least mr. b and miss m are tall enough to actually be able to wade through all that snow.
i have a friend who teaches in chicago as well, and she couldn't believe the schools closed either.
keep staying warm!

That looks awesome. We never get snow so it's all novelty to me but wow! And I'd take that snow over the cyclones & floods that have ravaged queensland any day!

Mary said...

WOW! Our "blizzard" consisted of some ice and a dusting of snow. I wanted thundersnow, dammit! I can't believe how wrong the meteorologists were. Apparently the storm hit you up north, though! On the bright side, the snow wears the dogs out quickly! Poor Mr. B looks like he needs to be pulled out of the drift. Maybe instead of boots, you should start researching snow shoes for dogs?

SusanA said...

I saw Chicago on the news today and stopped by here to see if you all had been out yet. What an amazing sight. I wish we'd get that kind of snow just once! Congratulations for digging out despite it all. Love that Incredible Hulk reference too btw! Have fun (if you can :)

I thought of you guys as the snow hit Chicago. I'm glad you all are doing as well as can be expected :) COME ON SPRING!

orange sugar said...

That looks like the storm we got a couple of weeks ago that dropped 2 feet of snow out here in New England. We got a nice ice storm the other day. I'm definitely sick of the snow and can't wait for spring. Stay warm.

Yikes, that doesn't look like fun for humans or dogs! I don't know what our dog would have done in that much snow - she doesn't like it at all. We'd probably have to let her use the bathroom in the house on those puppy pads or something! It's so funny that they actually did close schools there - those are the first places to close in the South, and it only takes the THREAT of snow. Schools seem to close an equivalent number of days for the amount of snow - when it snowed 5 inches in Atlanta, they were closed for 5 days :) Glad you guys got to stay in for a day at least - hope it's easier to walk the dogs soon!

WOW THAT SNOW IS VERY DEEP, WE THOUGHT OURS WAS. PIP WOULD BE BURIED IN THAT. WE HOPE ITS YOUR LAST.

Be careful, don't freeze nothing important off!

I wish you could come visit me in Southern California. It's not as cold here. I guess I shouldn't complain about rain when it happens, right?

We were so lucky - our front yard managed to avoid a lot of the snow build up so we could just go to the front all of Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. I think that's what we'll be doing for a while since our backyard is so deep with snow that it even tops Toni's head!
