Chicago finally got hit with our big snowstorm and the pooches are having a fantastic time frolicking in the drifts. While a snow-covered city can be so beautiful, we still have to face the fact that it is a city. All the food, rubbish, and miscellaneous items that normally litter the ground are just temporarily covered up with snow.
Since Miss M. is extremely food motivated, she figured this out quite quickly. On one of our first ventures out, she dug into a drift and pulled out a half-eaten Gyro. Probably a relic from someone who was eating one mid-blizzard.
Another time she dug in and pulled out a dead rat. The tail was swinging from her mouth and I was pulling on the back of her neck trying to get her to drop it. Ordinarily I stick my hand in her mouth to pull things out, but not this time. We stood at a standstill for several minutes doing her signature over-attention stare:
After several minutes of waiting, she finally dropped it. Now we just keep an extra lookout in case one of the pooches goes in for a dive. Has anyone else been having these types of problems?

Nope, no dead rats in the backyard, thank goodness! Although, in Trouper's younger years, he did catch a bird or two in the summertime. That was disheartening.
When I walk dogs at the shelter, we're always dodging something, especially when we pass the Taco Bell. Mainly wrappers, pigs that humans are... ;)
Eeek!! I would have extreme issues with that!! Glad it was you and not me! Nothing too bad being dug out of the Texas snow right now! :o)
p.s. that was me deleting the previous comment, I was signed in wrong!
Luckily we haven't had any of that with the big snow, but we have to dig something out of Melanie's mouth almost every other walk we take her on - It's amazing how she tracks that stuff down!
In NC we don't get much snow, but when I lived in MI my dog Ernie came joyfully prancing up to the back door with a dead baby rabbit dangling from his mouth.
I traded him for a nylabone smeared in peanut butter, but I was forever traumatized.
We had this when we lived in a snowy area but now its all just laying there in the open for them to eat
Miss M and my sweet staffy Bailey have the same mentality!!! FOOD and dead animals no matter what!!!
Hope everyone is staying warm!

Oh gross! I would have hurt myself I would have been laughing so hard though. It's so gross but so yummy to them. Ewww!
She is so cute with that little face though.
And I love their jackets!
We have a problem at the moment with big fish washed up on the beach. It was a job to keep Pip off but then one still alive swished its tail and he ran back to me. But a gyros wont do that, so I don't know.
Oh my you guys are hysterical with your hoods on! BOL

My mother once had a fight with her Bastard (Bassett) Hound over a juicy toad he dragged in at 2 AM!!! The Bastard won.

Thanks for visiting my blog and commenting. I'm glad you did, because now I know about yours and I'll add it to my google Reader. I visited Chicago a few years ago and it's on my list of Lovely Cities. I loved your inner city buildings (better than New York, in my opinion!)
Penny, my dog, eats anything she finds. She's well-trained in most other respect, but not "leaving it". Definitely not leaving it. And I agree with Pibble's comment that humans are disgustingly messy. We seem to find fast-food chicken bones on nearly every walk.
PS
I got a great word from your comments word verification program - it was "unwoof".
Ha, I love their coats! My two hooligans took a few minutes to remember that snow was actually fun to play in; the two fosters, however, are still not sold on the idea. :)
Not in California :) Ewww about the rat. Daisy is not very food motivated, Roscoe however will eat everything.
And I thought I had it bad with the chicken bones EVERYWHERE around where I live. You win with the dead rat.
