Miss M: The Over-Confident Dog

We've always considered ourselves lucky that we have confident dogs.
Confident that they can walk the city streets without problem.
Confident they invite foster dogs into their home without caring.
And confident that they're unfazed by random drunk festival-goers who over-excitedly grab at their lips.
But then we have Miss M who is Over-confident.
Over-confident in her athletic abilities
Over-confident that other dogs want her to use them as furniture
Over-confident that everyone she meets will want to meet her even more.
Miss M is over-confident in herself.
Even though I know she lacks in athletic skill (and apparently direction).
That when she's with a group of dogs she's really "that dog". The one trying to keep up with the gaggle all playing together and being left behind.
And the thing I remember the most, is when we were in another neighborhood, and there was a little fluffy puppy tied up outside the coffeeshop. Nearly every single person who walked by stopped to pet that puppy. And Miss M would get so excited that they'd come pet her next. So excited that she would begin curling her lip and wiggling her entire body in anticipation. But no one stopped to pet her. Not a single person. Each time she would swivel her head to watch them pass by, but instead of being sad, she would just swivel her head back start curling her lip and wiggling her entire body. I still remember it. And it made me a bit sad.
Though Miss M has never been sad for herself. Miss M is over-confident.

Just had to say that your blog is like my morning newspaper. A cup of tea and a good read is how I start my days...after feeding a kid, 3 cats and Sprocket of course! Thanks for sharing!

I'd pet Miss M. The same happens with our boys - there our family, aren't they? We want them to be adored and loved and it hurts us when it doesn't happen.

How could people just keep walking without stopping to pet Miss M's adorable wiggly body? She is the epitome of what makes a pit bull so wonderful. I certainly could not resist saying hello.

I admire her confident attitude. Even if things don't work out, she never gives up. I wish I had a lot more of that myself!

Ms. M has that Zen like peace that does not pass judgment on the clueless......wish I had Ms M's confidence!!! She rocks it.

I'm not so sure she's over-confident, just very comfortable with herself. Don't you think? I think over-confident dogs tend to be very independent (they think they don't need you or anybody else), but she seems quite smitten with you guys and her zillions of other admirers . . .
Have a great weekend!

Wow. Miss M is a lot of things, but a disc dog is not in her future! But I'd take a Miss M over an insecure pup any day! She can woo crowds like no other.

The frisbee picture made me laugh out loud at work!! reminds me of one of my parent's Springers Rocky who tries to catch a frisbee with his paws instead of his mouth (much to the embarassment of his sister Pebbles, who is a phenomenal frisbee dog)

Miss M, you're my role model. Yup! Someday I hope I can be as full of the confidence as you are. I think you are Most Marvelous!

Oh, and those silly peoples who didn't stop to pet you - well, they didn't know what they were missing!

Hurley is similarly confident - confident in his ability to convince people to give him treats. He is also similarly clumsy when it comes to any athletic ability. I've recently taught him to twirl and he meanders around in a HUGE circle instead of a tight spin, like his very athletic sisters do. He's also the dog running at the back of the pack who looks like he's expending twice as much effort as the graceful sprinters at the front of the pack. I think Hurley would love being Miss M's pillow.

Miss M's over-confidence is what makes her Miss M! She couldn't be any other way. That story about no one stopping to pet her makes me so sad... although at least we know she's long since made up for it! :) I also agree with Sophie -- your blog is like my morning paper too! I wake up, drink some coffee, and read your blog before I begin my day's work! (As you can see, I started a little...late today). :)

I would have stopped to pet Miss M, shower her with kisses, AND smother her with hugs. I think she's very special, over-confidence and all!

Oh, poor Miss M! I hate that she was there waiting to be petted and no one petted her! Even though I know she is hardly lacking in attention or affection!

Oh Ms. M. You deserve to be as confident as you are! You beautiful incred-i-bull dog, you!

It's great that you've trained your dogs to be comfortable in so many situations. Over-confidence is definitely preferable to under-confidence, which we are working on with our dogs. Badger is scared of the sound that moving wheels make on pavement. Mushroom is scared of tiny barking dogs. Both are scared of the dumpster.

And her over-confidence is what makes her so endearing! We just love Ms. M. in our house. Kitty could use some of her skills..

This post reminds me of a quote. I don't remember who said it or even the wording. (Helpful, right?) But it said something about "envying the beasts" for their ignorance. Hades is always so confident that people want to meet him too, and it makes me sad. I find myself saying after we pass people, "How did they NOT comment on how adorable our dogs were being?"
Oh Miss M, a lot of people could learn from your confidence!

Miss M,
Those silly people don't know what they are missin'. You are the cutest puppy on the block, but you know that already!

Oh Miss M you are just wonderful :) Now your photo 'catching' the frisbee is absolutely pricelss! :D And you decked out in Mardi Gras beads...you are a most stunning party gal :) Oh, and you can sleep on top of me anytime. No need to ask at all ;D

my kids have that problem sometimes with people - everyone will go for the cute little fluffy dogs, who sometimes don't want to be patted and approached by countless strangers.... they are often ignored or avoided unless we are in a particularly doggie place.

Have to agree, it's disappointing when people don't understand what they're missing. But Miss M, she should just keep being fabulous - because that's what she is (clearly, check out that last shot!) ... :)
