To keep the dogs socialized, we love taking them on all kinds of adventures around the city. Yesterday we took the pooches to participate in the Red Door Animal Shelter's fundraising walk for the animals.
This is basically a dog walk, with over a hundred of your "closest friends" that winds its way through the the northside neighborhood and Indian Boundary Park. The rescue is a bit unique in that it also adopts rabbits, chickens, and ducks. This year they are celebrating 10 years of adoptions. We have done this walk the last couple of years; we really like how family friendly it is, and how we get to tour this northside neighborhood. The walk takes place north of Devon in a neighborhood filled with quaint bungalows and sprawling flower gardens:
My favorite part is that we finish at Indian Boundary Park: an enormous park complete with lake, playground, and "zoo". They have a couple of exhibits with barnyard animals. We were marveling at how much Miss M reminded us of the goats. I think she even thought so as she was barking (something she rarely does) and trying to meet them. I wonder if we did a DNA test if it would come out small percentage "goat".
I think a lot of people who hold negative stereotypes about pitbulls have never actually met one, so we also like to use these types of dog events to show people how well-socialized, intelligent, and charismatic pitties can be. Our pooches walked nicely among the multitude of retractable leashes, random barking, and dogs invading their space. Here we are taking a break from the crowd and listening for instructions:They remembered to sit nicely at cornersAnd every so often we gave them a trick command to impress any onlookers. Here is Miss M with her signature wave:
And Mr B's signature trick of just looking cute:
We loved meeting other dogs. Here is Mr. B meeting another pittie:And this pooch who reminded us so much of a young Miss M. with similar stance, chin, and facial expression. His owner even said she was a boxer-pit.
And we were super-excited to meet our fellow Chicagoan dog Pip. Pip is a Red Door Shelter alum and has been working out to prepare for the walk. Though it is a long walk for such a little dog, Pip made a great showing pushing through the final leg.

You guys always do such great things with your pups! I wish our area did as many events as Chicago! Mr. B does do a great job of looking cute!
It was SO MUCH FUN meeting Miss M and Mr. B yesterday! And I must agree - Miss M and Mr. B are both perfectly charming, well-behaved, lovely dogs!
Cheers, Pip
That looks like it was a lot of fun. I hope Mr. B & Miss M. took a nice long nap after that.
We just saw Pip's blog about it this morning, too! It looks like one amazing event. I am still green with envy! It must have been great showing off such well-behaved dogs, too!
I've noticed that, not only have some people who are scared of pits never met one, some of them can't even recognize a pit by sight. I was at a dog fair with my pit and had been talking to a lady with two basset hounds for about five minutes. She finally asked what kind of dog I had and when I told her "pit bull" she gasped aloud, grabbed her dogs, and dragged them about ten feet away. Then she paused to yell, "Is she friendly?" All I managed to stutter out was, "Um, yes." But what I wanted to say was, "Well, you've been standing 6 inches from her for the last five minutes, does she SEEM friendly?" Anyway... I always love seeing updates of your pups!
Miss M you have a wonderful wave! Mr. B you are just the cutest! Looks like great fun was had by all in attendance.

What a couple of cuties. And I love Miss M's face in the first pic. How could you not?
Miss M waving is just TOO adorable! And Mr. B is always full of the handsome. I think it's Most Funny how Miss M reacted to the goats. Maybe she just wanted some cabrito?
What a very much fun day!

That is just great. Ms. M has the most soulful eyes; I love that first picture of her. She is just pitiful. You just want to hug and kiss her all over his pitiful, little face.
But that is a signature pittie trick too, isn't it? :)
What a great walk and event. It sure looked like you guys had a lot of fun meeting all those new friends. Mom keeps us socialized to since Lily screams at Labs. Hope you guys enjoyed your day.

I think Miss M might be affended that you think she is part goat
Oh that sounds like such a great event! And Mr. B sure performed his looking cute trick with great panache!
sounds like a wonderful event and you and Pip met each other there! That is so great. It's probably also a very good thing that you take your "pitbassadors" out to meet and greet. It is sad that pitties have to work so much harder and make a pawfect impression on everyone just to make up for the bad press they've gotten. We Shar Pei have gotten some too, and I'm always reading descriptions of our personalities that aren't anything like me at all.

looks like a fun event! i love miss m's wave. i didn't realize quite how brindle-y she was until i saw the picture of her looking at the goats with her back to the camera. just lovely!

I have made exactly the same experience as Doc Sinister with the dog I had before Teal'c. Jack was a big American Pit Bull and I was talking to a mother that asked me if her daughter can pet the cute doggie. Sure... All good, small talk until she asked what breed Jack was... "How dare you to let my child pet your dog!" and the little one stared crying... Something called manners stopped me from shouting!
Look at that! Miss M, Mr. B, and Pip! How exciting!
