Pooches: First Pit Bull Sighting

Since we've been working on increasing pit bull awareness, I was thinking back to my first pit bull impression. My friend's dog, little Ms. M, is the first pit bull I have ever met. Back then I thought she was the biggest and most muscular dog I have ever seen. I was actually terrified the first time my friend asked me to stop by his house to feed her. I kept checking under the bed, expecting her to leap out any moment; instead I just found her laying nicely in her bed.
It is funny how all of that changed when I met A and Ms. M.
My first several days with Ms. M were actually quite scary. It was the first time I ever had to spend a lot of time with a big dog and to make matters worse, Ms. M loves staring at people. I kept thinking she was going to eat me the moment A left the room. Eventually, I got over my fears, and Ms. M and I became BFFs, and even a personal guard dog:
That was until, we adopted Mr. B. Since we had Ms. M we always think of him as being a small dog or sometimes an oversized rat. So it is funny to hear people comment on his size. Actually it is funny to hear people call both Ms. M and Mr. B big dogs, when they are the perfect size to us.

They seem just the right size to me. I guess we get used to the size of our dogs. A friend has a big German Shepherd and I never think of her as big when I'm with her. But she's actually bigger than my friend, in terms of length.

It's funny how after awhile their sizes seems to change in our minds. I never think of Flash and Ollie as that big until I'm with my parents doxie. Then they just seem huge!

Miss M looks very serious as a guard dog, though I can't take her seriously in her winter coat!

Haha I always think mine are like average then I go to my parents and their doxies are the size of my dogs toys and then I realize that my dogs really are the size of mini horses :)

Ms. M looks like the border patrol to Canada in that coat, it's so great.

Mr. T and I like really big dogs, so we always think of pits as small. One of my brothers has great danes and I think they're the coolest. I'm also a sucker for mastiffs. I like ponies apparently ;) But whenever someone comments on my "big scary" dogs, I have to do a double take. They can't be talking about my dainty little pits!

Love how the 3 of you are all snuggled up napping together!

I call Bender 'little Bender' and Barbie 'little black dog' and people look at me like I'm mad.

Aw - I love the "group hug" shot! And the "guard dog" shot - Ms. M is too funny.

I don't really remember what my impression of pit bulls was before I became an owner. My friend had a dog (Dexter, who later came to live with me) and I always thought it was funny that people were afraid of him, because he just laid around all of the time and ate his food. He is such a clown dog!

When people comment on the size of my dogs, it's always a bit weird to me - I see bigger dogs all of the time; labradors, hound dogs, greyhounds - all are at least taller than my pitties. My friend's hound dog is taller than both of my dogs by at least a head, and 15 lbs. heavier, but people always have something to say about my dogs - usually something along the lines of "who's walking who?"

The first time I met a pit bull was when someone dumped a mangy pit pup (that they presumably couldn't sell) behind my house when I was eleven. My neighbors found her, were going to take her to a shelter with a no-pit adoption policy, I talked my parents into taking her and ... the rest is history. :)

I was shocked when I popped Louis on the scale recently and discovered that he rings in at 130 lbs. He just doesn't seem that big anymore to me (and certainly Napoleon, at 56 lbs, seems like a shrimp!) but I also get the stale "who's walking who?" joke when I go out with them. Mmmm, such originality.

Heehee...that is a most adorable picture of the three of them spooning! SERIOUS cuteness factor going there. And Miss M makes a terrific guard dog, although, well, it's a little hard to take her serious-like in her fashionable coat.

Mom says when they went to pick up Brudder Ranger, they thought...OMD! He's SOOOO small! But he's got such a big dog attitude that they don't think of him as a little dog at all. Isn't it funny how things change?

That picture of the three of them is priceless!

I don't think of my guys as big either until I see the look on some people's faces. They seem just right to me:)

I like that picture of the 3 of them spooning! And Miss M in that picture "guarding" you! ahhahahaha.
It's funny to hear you call them big dogs, because as a Dane owner everything is small in comparison!

They're both adorable, and well, to me, they're not that big! lol I've learned that size is relative. I recently had a good laugh when somebody went on and on about Bunny being a big dog. To me, she's a tiny little thing at barely fifty pounds.

I love the pictures in this post! Everyone thinks I'm a giant, but my parents couldn't imagine sharing their house with anyone smaller!

Quizz only seems big when my brother's dog comes over to play. Of course, that's a min pin and I don't qualify him as a dog. More a cat in a dog suit. So, Quizz seems gigantic. But really? They are just the right size to snuggle with.

They seem like an excellent size to me. Big is Mango or Remington. OK, they're huge, but you know what I mean. To me most pitties look medium sized, but their weight sometimes puts them in the Large category. Anyway, your two are just a lovely size.

lotsa licks, Lola

Those darling faces are the opposite of scary....More like cuddly kiss faces!

Mom and Dad think we're big until we go to daycare and the see a whole bunch of other 'doodles' and then they think we're runts (especially me, but even Abby is a bit small for a Goldendoodle...). Go figure! We love the sleeping picture!

Unfortunately, Pit Bulls have a long haul ahead of them thanks to the media, and it reminds me of what happened after the movie Jaws came out. For about two years after it was released, the world was bombarded with stories of sharks run amok!
I've been taking Wilbur to an off leash park for a couple of weeks now and I've had several people comment to me about how sweet he is. And I have to say, not one skirmish that's been started there has been initiated by a pitty!
Big surprise, right?

The perfect size with perfectly sized heads! Don't non-pit bulls look like their heads are too small for their bodies? That picture is so sweet. Do they really all spoon with their legs thrown over each other like that? What I love about Levi is that he's so solid and makes a good pillow.

Those pictures are great!! yes Daisy is the perfect size too :)

people call our 50lb dogs big dogs (even before Big Carl came around) and we laugh since they aren't very big at all

I wasn't around pit bulls until I started volunteering at the humane society. They are some of the biggest goofiest dogs I have ever been around.
