Pumpkin is the miracle dog food; canned pumpkin has the amazing dual ability to combat diarrhea or clear up constipation. We always keep a can on hand to spoon out as needed. While the pooches always get their pumpkin from a can, they were kind of curious about these white pumpkins we set up for Halloween:
And I had never even thought about cooking a real pumpkin until I heard this amazing recipe from NPR; a pumpkin stuffed with bread and cheese and all things good.
During the interview the host actually stopped, with dead air, to gasp for breath because her first bite was so amazing. When I saw a friend's Facebook page saying she made it, I knew I had to give it a try. I really don't know how to cook, but this was surprisingly easy. We bought mini pumpkin pie pumpkins and you just toss in stale bread, cheeses, bacon, herbs and bake it for about 2 hours. The only change I would make is not to salt the pumpkin per the recipe; the bacon and cheese already have enough salt. It was amazingly good, simple, and will become our go-to holiday dish.
Of course, we didn't feed this one to the pooches. Though I thought I saw Miss M trying to get some ideas about the mini-pumpkin decor:

I'm going to have to give that recipe a try. I gave Petey a taste of canned pumpkin and he enjoyed it so I'm thinking of making a pumpkin cookie for the guys (without the sugar of course).
We are so weird - We won't eat pumpkin! And I know all my friends love it. Now that recipe, I would surely try....

I've taken the canned pumpkin (for Stella) and spooned it onto a tray to freeze it and package in bite sized pieces. That way if she needs to be "regulated" I just reach into the freezer bag and get one or two. That recipe sounds delicious. This has been the summer of all things squash/pumpkin for me so I have a new appreciation for it. You might try the gingered soup sometime too. Thanks!

That sounds so good! We brought in all of our pumpkins and squash that we had on the front porch and cut them up into chunks and baked them. The dogs love it and we made pie too!

All of our dogs love pumpkin. In the summer we freeze in their kongs and they can't get enough of it.
That recipe looks pretty good, and sans bacon it's vegetarian friendly too!

I read about this recipe recently on someone else's blog. It sounds incredibly delicious, especially when it's so cold outside. The best in comfort food. Sadly, pumpkins are long gone from local stores. Maybe next year?

I'm so making that recipe - maybe even this weekend! Must say, I would have pegged you as a whiz in the kitchen.
We alternate between canned pumpkin and oatmeal - a couple of tablespoons with every meal. Our clean-up has become so much easier as a result! But I have to say, I think the pumpkin does its job better. I love Kate@TwentySixtoLife's suggestion to freeze it in a Kong. Trying that one, too!
Hmmm, we think even our Mom might be able to handle this recipe!
