DoggyStyle: Alternatives to Hardwood Floor

I often rationalize that since our pooches have to live in a condo, with mainly hardwood floors, we make up for it by having plenty of places to lay. Though in my search for attractive dog bed alternatives, I think I've gone a bit overboard. Between our Ikea Sheepskin rugs:
 Floor Pillows:
And tepee they have a lot of alternatives:

The funny thing is, despite all these options the pooches still prefer to share, laying  like this:
Or even like this:
Is this standard for most dogs?

What's really funny is when my cat takes over a Pit Bull-sized dog bed and forces the dog to schlump on the floor next to her.

I got the monsters an area rug, so that, plus a few dogs beds, overstuffed crates, and a human bed that's allowed, they have more than enough options, even with a greedy cat.

I think it just speaks to how much Ms. M and Mr. B adore each other!!

No that's not really the case at my house. Generally speaking they don't like to share their beds, unless it's REALLY cold outside :)
Now if I'm in the bed they will completely lay on top of each other to all get to be in the bed at once. I think Ms M and Mr B just have a very unique and wonderful relationship. They are just beyond cute together.

The fosters are always together, but our personal dogs would rather take a bath than lay together. They love each other, but they also love their own space. I can only dream of them cuddling up as yours do :)

Yeah, pretty much. Despite being allowed on sofas and the bed, and also taking into account the various cat/dog beds around the house, Tucker & Phoebe can most often be found lying, not side by side like Miss M. and Mr. B., but entwined around one another like vines. It's pretty cute.

Mr. B in his Teepee always cracks me up.

"Dis mah teepee y'all."

I'm not a big fan of snuggling with anyone but my humans! Sometimes mom catches me snuggling with Oreo, but she's the frist one I've ever laid near!

All of our dogs prefer to snuggle with us than with each other. Usually when I catch them snuggling with one another it's because they're trying to get closer to us somehow (there's only so much space in one person's lap!). I think Ms. M and Mr. B are just in loooooooooove. ;)

I think it must depend on the dog. When Bunny came home, she was really drawn to Lilac. I don't know if she has mama dog pheromones floating around her or what, but Bunny was always wanting to lay down next to her. Lilac would tolerate it for a little bit, then get up and move. But now I see Bunny often laying on top of Blueberry. Blue won't seek her out, but she does let her lay there with her. None of the girls will lay with Morgan, though, unless it's up on our bed and nobody is touching! lol I notice that it happens a lot less when it's warm, too.

Not mine! Klausie is a total snob, and gets up and moves when Natty tries to snuggle with him. The nerve!

My girl Laci wishes it was common. She wants to cuddle with Apollo, but Apollo just moves to anther spot every time she tries. They both sleep on opposite sides of the bed on their quilts and they tend to stick to their spots in the living room too (they both have faux fur throws that they love)...but every so often Laci sneaks in for a cuddle and Apollo acts like she pushed him off his throw.

I think it's awfully most wonderful that you gives Miss M and Mr. B such comfy places to lay. That is very impawtant, let me tell you!

I WISH Brudder Ranger would snuggle with me like that. Sometimes I'm able to sneak in a snuggle when he's asleep but usually the closest he'll let me come is laying butt to butt when we're looking out the window.

That last picture is priceless! I don't have two dogs but when I dogsit for my friend, each lab insists on their own bed or spot.

Lucy and Calhoun would snuggle when they were the only 2 in the house. Sometimes Nikki will try to cuddle with Lucy but the favorite lap in the house is mine. This is super fun with dogs weighing in at 50, 72, 80, and 92 pounds!

we have recently developed this phenomenon at our house, but the motivation is different. i usually lay the beds side by side, but there is competition over who gets the bed that is closer to where the humans are. usually one dog grabs it, the other begrudgingly takes the dog that is farther away (usually by mere inches), and the back dog spends the next hour slowly creeping his way into a sharing position, so that he is not any further away from the target :)

We love this idea. So comfy. What works well too are the large shag area rugs. We love you guys

We are so jealous of your TeePee...we want one, just can't figure out where to put it...in the backyard?? I know what you mean about perhaps too much, but it's such an integral part of your dogs' lives (sleeping) that you want them to have a lot of options. Cassie, however, thinks that dog beds are too hot (and too chewable), so she prefers sleeping on the marble in front of the fireplace...keeps a belly cool! I like your pillow padding ideas though...Cassie too likes to have a pillow to rest her dainty head upon!

That is so cute!
We have carpet in our condo (Im dying to put in hardwood floors) and for Darwin it doesn't matter because she'd choose the couch over the floor any day!

That's not standard for mine anyway.. But Luna can be a bit of a snob, and well wyatt is a bed/couch hog. They are COMPLETE opposites. And both prefer chairs/couches to the beds on the floor. I think if they were both Vizslas Luna would be more apt to have wyatt sleep with her. I like that they are very tolerant of each other though (most Luna as she doesn't bug his space overall) especially in tight places.

Your pooches have some very stylish sleeping spots.. I wonder what our hunting dogs would thin of a sheep skin rug.... hmmmm

Rarely do Fi and Abby sleep smushed next to each other (although they have been known to do it). When TaiChi was still alive and Abby was not yet a gleam in her father's eye, Fi would sleep in the a big dog bed with TaiChi curled up next to her (except for when TaiChi would kick her out of the bed, and Fi would be on the floor and there would be a little teeny poodle in a ginormous dog bed).

Fi and Abby sleep on the same bed/couch in the house, but they aren't usually touching. When we're in the motorhome, they each sleep in their own dog bed (unless we're in bed, and then I'm the one sleeping on the floor...).

Fi is just more of a snuggler than Abby is; Abby will sleep on our feet, above my head, above my husband's head (we have strategically located pillows for this purpose). I think Fi would sleep smushed next to Abby if Abby were interested, but she's usually not. (Again, Fi and TaiChi were always snuggled together.)

I love the pictures. And the teepee!

-Dr. Liz (for the record, Fi is curled up next to my hip while Abby is roaming the house like a Great White Shark...)

that is so cute, and what spoilt doggies having so many beds to choose from! That said, ours have a beanbag each, a huge rug on the floor, a couch downstairs, a coffee sack bed, a crate each, and Snoopy has a kennel too....
Snoopy and Arrow only snuggle when it is cold, and it is generally Snoopy doing the snuggling, and Arrow just tolerates it!

I wish i had all hardwood floors. Fur + carpets + allergies = not good. My dogs both steal the human bed during the day but use their dog beds most of the night. they like options.

You guys sure have mastered the balance between stylish and dog friendly decor. Your alternative dog beds are fantastic (I am on the hunt for the perfect floor pillow-I think I will just have to sew a couple) and you have even managed to have your pooches match your style :). As always, I love your blog and look forward to reading it everyday!

My pooches don't share unless they are a cold, otherwise they prefer their own space.

Emily said...

Oh absolutely! I have two greyhounds and when we lived in a house with hardwood floors you'd often see them sleeping with only their head on a GIANT dog bed. They rarely share the same space though, so it looks like you've got two adorable buddies :D.

Awwww, what could be cuter than those two faces smooshed together looking all adorable!

For the most part, we all like our own space :) The bigger, the better!

It's normal for us. We have three pugs, and they all cuddle up together in their crate at night. When it was just two, we had separate crates, and they would cry and cry when we separated them. Eventually, when it was bedtime, they'd both scurry into one, and we just let them be. After #3 was old enough to make it through the night without a bathroom break, he joined the other two in the big crate.

Your kiddos are such snugglebugs. I wish mine were more so. Arwen isn't big on cuddling with her sister, although I think Nyxie would be trilled. One rare occasions, but definitely not the norm.

Wonderful that they get along so well. Great photos. Love the one of them snuggling in the crate!
