The elf is a little figurine that parents hide around the house. Its location changes every day, so you never know where it is. So not only is it spying on the kids...but each night it goes and tattles to Santa if the kids have been naughty.
When I first heard this it sounded kind of frightening, until I realized how poor Mr. B has been living with his very own Elf on a Shelf:
Just like the elf, Miss M can pop up anywhere:
She will uncomfortably watch you:
And she has no problem tattling:
The true story.
Snitch!

Love it! Poor Mr. B. I bet Ms. M always tattles on him:)
This is just the laugh that we needed! I guess Annie is our Elf on a Shelf as she keeps everyone "in line". We had not heard of it before this year either.
Unseemly laughter is emanating from my cubicle at work....
I love those pictures.
That would be Monty - although, he uses his peeking to sneak up behind me and touch me with cold nose.
Sam
We need one of these! We will catch one of the pups just after they do something naughty...and the other will be sitting there watching!
Side comment: where did you find that vase (planter?) in the first picture?
HAHAHA.
Miss M looks so innocent!
I could stare at Miss M. all day! Her face just makes me so happy! I have started realizing that Jake can sneak up on moment, like I'll wonder where he is and then I'll realize he is sitting inches away from me, staring. I need to get him a bell.
I love it, Ms. M is such a cutie! I hope Mr. B is being good, it seems you'll never know where she'll pop up next!
Ha! I've never heard of elf on a shelf either, but miss m makes a good one! I'm afraid my pups are painfully obvious:/
A pup on a shelf lives here
Benny & Lily
I had never heard of that either! I only somewhat realized the tradition from a series of facebook posts a cousin of mine made this holiday.
I would not mind Miss M spying on me! SO darn cute, she can pop up any time! I don't think either of our resident pups are a Pup on the Shelf, they are more or less just our velcro dogs
Her face is priceless. Seriously, priceless.

@Hannah--The planter is from Ikea. We were just there today and we saw they are added some additional types in the candle section that would make nice planters too.
I never considered an "elf on a shelf" on our house, but I suppose it would have to be the cats. They constantly spy on the dogs. I am believe they even do naughty things to get the dogs in trouble.
I'll bet Miss M's loving gaze doesn't miss a thing around there. I think Elf on a Shelf is weird and the moms who do creative things with them every night have too much time on their hands!
Oh my ... I LOVE this post! Miss M's expressions are just priceless! And yes ... in our house, Tucker is "the enforcer." He will definitely rat Phoebe or the cats out if they are doing something they shouldn't. So funny.
