Daily Walk: Chicago Dog "Grime-fighting" Gear

As our snowdrifts from our Chicago Blizzaster have melted, our pooches' coats and boots have quickly morphed from snow-gear to the all important Chicago "Grime-fighting" gear. I always dread the city-thaw as all the city trash, dog poo and half-eaten food that people happily tossed into the snowdrifts are suddenly thawing and festering in puddles. And we have to trudge through this grime just to go on our daily walk. Here's an idea of what we're dealing with courtesy of Mr. B's Pet Eye Camera--but with more puddles:
So now we need to "gear up" for all of our walks We're starting to really love our PAWZ  boots which I feel were made just to combat grime. Miss M's long, curved toenails scoop up mud and I've found it so much easier to just take off the boot than trying to wipe each individual toenail. And even though it may not be raining, we use their Raincoats which cover their undersides and prevent them from huge grime puddle splashes.
We still  have problems giving the pooches baths, but we picked up this Perfect Coat Waterless Shampoo
which is easier than trying to tackle Miss M in a tub and makes the pooches smell like apples.
The only positive thing about the big thaw, is that we're hoping spring is on the way. Anyone else have any good mud tips?

that thaw stuff looks disgusting! I think Barbie would have her nose in there trying to find stuff to eat!

We're a big fan of Earthbath Natural Grooming Wipes over here - the green tea scent is awesome, but they also have a hypoallergenic/fragrance free option.

Dex hates baths, but he loves getting a rub down with these wipes!

Yuuuuck! At least that what Mom would say. We would say - let us play in it! Dad had the plumber connect an outside hose bib to the water heater - so now we have hot water OUTSIDE, too, which is where we get our baths.

I just wrap the dogs in plastic wrap to keep the grime off!

Just kidding! I use a lot of waterless shampoo after we go for walks during the thaw, but if they get too dirty they get hosed down.

Baby wipes work really well to get mud off Charlee. He runs and plays pretty hard daily, so mud unfortunately is a daily occurrence with him.

I think wipes and your grime gear is the best way to go. We have wayyyy more dog towels at our home in rainy Portland than we do people towels!

Lots of dog towels by the front door! Although when the grime gets too bad, it's dog-wrestling-in the-bath time. Great workout, if you happen to miss your gym time. We're free of the really grundgy grime now, just lots of dry salt and grit on the roads. But that comes off with just a quick brush off. Grime time means spring is on the way!

You're really hard hitting grime fighters!!! We have a lot of mud here when the snow starts thawing. Mom keeps baby wipes at the door and wipes me down with them after wiping off my feet and belly to make sure she got it all! BOL!

Wow, that's some ugly 'snirt'! Glad to see people taking such good care of their babies...Daily baths would be terrible for their skin. The coats look great too...Go Ruff Wear!

we just do the dog towels ourselves, and have started using the wipes on their feet (thanks to your inspiration). if it's super icky, we dampen a washcloth with warm water and give their bellies and legs a rubdown before the dry towel. i should get them rain coats for this purpose though!

I never thought I would be so happy to walk up three flights of stairs to get to our unit but it has made it very easy to keep Boss fairly dry and mud free after frolicking in the snow. We just let him run up the carpeted stairs and it really does the trick. We do waterless baths once a week to keep the smells away though.

Yes! My mud tip is to go out in the yard when it's really squishy and dig, dig, dig. Then come back in and decorate the carpet with my pawprints. It's SO beautiful! But mom makes this kinda screwed-up face when that happens so now she's started wiping off my paws AND has put down a whole bunch of rugs on the carpet so she can just put them in the washing machine. But the bad part is that all my pawprints come off of them when she does that! Can you imagine?

Share your mud tips when you get them! When we take Dar to the park after a big rain she gets mud all up her legs and under her belly. She needs a full body suit to keep clean!

Ugh! I don't envy you that mess!

We went to the dog park last weekend and Bunny came out with muddy feet while Morgan came out with muddy everything! lol After the baths, hubby still noticed mudballs on her belly. I don't think I'm much help!

That first shot is the best ever! They would be intimidating... but for their fancy little booties ;)

We just do dog towels too when we need to. I think the booties are a better idea though!

They look adorable in their raincoat and boots! We have to wipe Lily's paws down when we come in. Yes, we get mud in California. Right now, most of it seems to be in our yard. She had a playdate and he likes to jump on the furniture so the throw blankets came out just before he got here. They're in and out of the house chasing each other around and making lovely mudprints on the floor. I steam them after the playdate with our Shark steamer. Takes about fifteen minutes! Love that thing!! But maybe I'll buy some of those booties and make them wear those instead!

Seeing them in their gear always brings a smile to may face :)
Mud tips? Tough one. A moist towel set up by the door before walks? We have 4 or 5 old towels to rotate through mud season!
