SociaBulls: How Long can a Dog Walking Group Walk During the Winter?

We've always loved the quote "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes". Though E was just telling me of another quote "There is no such thing as bad weather, only soft people".
Which reminded me of our Chicago SociaBulls group.
Last winter was the first winter for the group, and we weren't quite sure what we would do once winter struck. We planned for taking a hiatus, for certain times when it would just be too cold to walk.
Though we did have a mild winter, we only canceled one time for cold weather.
And this year we had no cold weather cancelations.
We do have smaller groups, but we have kept walking. Most of us don't have backyards, so we need to take our dogs out for walks anyway, which is more fun to do with a large group.
We do make accommodations bundling up our pups and ourselves: we don't stop for water breaks and we often create a shorter path if it's really cold. Plus, once you start walking, you stay a bit warmer.

How long do your pups usually stay out for walks?

In mild central Virginia, it never gets too cold for walks! Especially for this Minnesota girl. My current foster, a husky mix much prefers cooler weather.

We do about a mile but our only cold winter here was the winter before we got dogs. I like that second quote better. Despite multiple layers of pants, socks, shirts, hats, a scarf, silk long johns, my warmest coat, and sometimes hot hands, I don't remember ever being anything but freezing on winter horse show days at home!

Ray seems impervious to cold weather, so fortunately his mom is a wimp who keeps his outings shorter. When I walk King, I've noticed he is usually ready to head back after 15-20 minutes.

Ed would stay out forever, but Tess usually draws the line and stops walking - completely, as in "you-have-to-carry-me-4-blocks-home-I'm-not-walking." We've also had a relatively mild winter in Erie, so it's not affected us too much.

20 minutes if the pup could walk on pavement and not snow or ice

Lacy is unaffected by the cold. We do a daily 25-minute, 3-mile run. Icebreaker and Smartwool are my best friends :)

Stef, wow, thank you so much for sharing your love story with us. I am amazed by your unselfishness, love, patience and persistence. The inner light within me salutes and honors the inner light within you.
Also I'd like you to know that although you feel as though you shouldn't have been party to backyard breeding you still rescued those puppies and that's something to be proud of. So often I'm upset and disappointed in people and their lack of compassion and humanness to animals and to each other. But, thank goodness I'm a part of this wonderful community that is a constant reminder of the good in people.
