Miss M enjoyed all of the extra pity-attention she received when she had her large plastic cone on short walks and the pillow cone on our longer walks. She was happy to see people run up to her and offer pets of comfort all because she had a little bump on her tush.
So she decided to break a nail. And only Miss M can break a nail in such a dramatic way to end up in a leopard-print cast.
And fainting was involved.
In her excitement for breakfast, Miss M decided to do a 'twirl of joy' before trotting down the hallway. Next thing we know, there was a trail of blood in the hallway.
Then when we reached the main room it looked more like a murder scene.
It turns out, Miss M snapped her toenail clean off. And since the quick is connected to the vein, it was bleeding everywhere.
Lucky for A, she is married to a man with nerves of steel, who works closely with blood, dissections, and even teaches a whole blood spatter unit.
A was holding Miss M still, so she could put pressure on her paw to stop the bleeding, and she was also trying to catch Mr. B who was still excited about breakfast and running in the blood puddles, I ran to our bathroom to find some hemostatic gauze or something to cauterize the wound.
On the way back, I found her nail on the floor.
All 1.5 inches of it.
It felt kind of like finding a finger that was cut off.
Upon finding the nail, the world started turning pitch black and I started sweating profusely. Before I know it, I'm laying on the ground in Miss M's blood. Meanwhile, A is putting pressure on Miss M's paw to stop the bleeding and holding Mr. B's collar to stop him from running all around the blood, and she is calling out to make sure I'm okay.
After all of this, Miss M was not quite pleased with her tiger-print cast, she thinks it clashed too much with her brindle coat:
and she preferred the cheetah print much more:
Which she even let me sign:
Reluctantly:
We didn't realize that losing nails were so dramatic, or so common! Has this ever happened to anyone else?
Also:
Because Miss M is adaptable.
She just can't handle it.
Sometimes this happens.

omg, 1.5 inches?! I might have passed out too! She is stylin' with her new bandage, I hope it heals up soon!
I wasn't around when it happened (I share custody of my dog with my ex husband) but my dog somehow managed to rip her nail out. From what my ex described there was a lot of care to make sure she didn't get a bone infection while it healed. It has grown back funkily but she is good now. But yes, dog's nails can cause much drama!
Oh my gosh!! We havne't experienced this...yet! Although, if anyone will do it, it will be Edi! I am NOT an injury person, so this would definitely be an "experience" for us!
You have such a diva on your hands -- but she looks so cute in her cheetah print cast!
My imagination gets worked up and the scene playing in my head gets funnier by the minute. In my head it all looks like a three stooges-like scenario with accompanying music (not so gory even with blood because it's in black & white) =)
But I'm so glad everyone was fine. I hope you didn't bump your head hard, E. That must have been a lot of clean-up involved after. Thanks for sharing!
my pup lost his when he was running outside at my parents. it was christmas day and the snow was kinda crusted with ice. clean off. so gross. he definitely didn't get a fancy leopard bandaid though.
heal quick miss m!
This same thing happened to my baby a year ago! I am not at all exaggerating when I say that it bled like a massive head wound! It looked like someone had been murdered in our bedroom. There was so much blood we ended up having to completely change out the carpet. It took more than a year to grow back.
I've never had one come completly off, but my baby girl Mystic' do grow off her quick once in awhile. That's pretty weird to see. Clipping your dogs toe nails and you notice that the nail is not attached to the quick. I hope it heals quick and no more incidents happen.
I know I should not laugh but, I can only see the comedy in the situation knowning all is well. I would say poor Mrs M needs to give her back half a break from all the lumps, bumps and breaks!
Chaos once ripped one of his nails clean off. We were in the yard and he yipped in pain. I couldn't find anything wrong, so we came inside. Only after he walked across the carpet and left blood behind did I realize what had happened.
I kinda want to see this finger claw now.
Poor Miss M., wishing he a speedy recovery.
Abbey snapped her nail off in her crate when she was stretching. It didn't bother her, her whole quick was exposed. We had to keep it clean and she was wearing boots while her nail grew back.
Wilbur 'broke' his thumb once at doggy day care. Thank god it didn't bleed, but it did fall off a week later. It has since grown back in. I don't mean to laugh either but a video of your drama would have gone viral!,
I apologize for laughing at your misfortune, but since I know all four of you I can 100% picture this happening! I'm glad Miss M allowed you to sign her cast and I hope you got the blood out of everything!!
Wow! What a story! We've never had this happen...yet. And I'm sure hoping it never does because I couldn't handle that much blood! I'm glad to hear that everyone is doing well after the incident.
ok, since it has a happy (and fashionable) ending, I will admit that I laughed..
(sorry!)
OMG, poor Miss M! I can't believe she broke off her entire nail just doing a twirl!
Like we say about Maggie and me, we're athletic, we're just not coordinated.:) Duke and the Mr. are much less likely to get injured.
First, poor Miss M, she's such had a lot of things going on! Here's to a speedy recovery.
Second, we know her pain and yours. Dottie has ripped a toe nail off not once but twice and both times trying to climb a tree to get a squirrel. One time I even had to rescue her out of the tree she'd managed to get herself wedged in the lower branches.
Good Grief, Miss M.!!! Her nails are (nicely) short in the pics (better than I can keep up with our 4), I don't understand how it happened... WOW!
Elka hasn't lost a nail (thank God), but I did quick her last summer. It took me forever to get her to stop bleeding, and then it started again the next morning. I've since bought a dremel, and am working on the acclimation process!
I do like the Cheetah cast ;)
What an ordeal! Stanzie had a nail split lengthwise to the quick once...it took forever to grow back correctly and caused her discomfort. Glad Miss M is on the road to recovery and in such a stylish way!
Wyatt's mom
This happened to Norman when he was playing in the snow, but it was only torn half off so it kept recurring. Poor guy:( We had to make a cast too but it kept coming off in the snow:/
Oh my! Once you find out every one's OK, it's funny. Glad to hear M's on the mend. And E, The Hubbs said to tell you, "Only real men write about passing out in their dogs blood." :-)
Poor Miss M! My wee hound broke/cut one of his in half last winter when he ran into the end of the drain spout. Not nearly this bad, but still a lot of whining and bleeding. Feel better, Miss M!
Ahh oh my gosh!! I would have freaked out with the blood too. I didn't know this was common either..?
Speeding recovery, Miss M! I'm glad you made this sound so amusing :)
Why do we laugh at other's misfortunes?
Holy cow, that was well written. I hope I'm laughing with you? (cringes, still grinning)
Hope all is well and the house cleaned up okay!
Miss M needs to be stylish. Always needs to coordinate :)
Never had a dog lose a nail. Part of a tail yes, but not a nail.
Lovely dog... I like it..

I almost fainted just reading that, while sitting in my classroom watching my students take a final exam. Wouldn't that have been a treat? "Teacher, what happened why did you faint?!" "Oh, I was just reading a dog blog." (By the way they are beginning level ESL students so I'm not how well "dog blog" would translate) ;) But anyway, YES,sort of I have had this happen to my Bubba, but it didn't come clean off it was still attached by one little bit and was sticking straight up! He had to be put under to have it removed - no fun, no fun at all!
